Plainsman makes dry and pugged clay bodies for potters, hobbyists and schools in the west. It is the only company in North America among about 45 that mines its own clay to make most of these products.

Plainsman Clays has long specialized in the production of plastic clay bodies, both from the materials we mine ourselves and from imported refined minerals. We make translucent porcelains having a wide range of plasticities and working properties, firing temperatures from C and up and fired properties differing degrees of whiteness, translucency, thermal expansion and hardness. We have the experience necessary to produce quality and consistent porcelains: it is alot about knowing which materials are most appropriate from the many choices available and about great diligence in testing and responsive adaptation to the changing properties of the materials. These are very popular in industry as a way to save energy since they fire at low temperatures , for aesthetic purposes, and as a way to make strong and durable ware at the lowest possible temperatures eg. The ceramic tile industry uses huge amounts of terra cotta clays in single fire vitrifying processes. Making high quality ware with these bodies is a technical challenge. Glaze crazing and shivering, leaching, efflorescence, warping and bloating in the kiln, glaze adherence, etc are common issues. Diligence and know-how are required to be able to test and adjust terra cotta body recipes over a period of time to keep them consistent for your production department since terra cotta raw materials are generally more inconsistent in working and firing properties.

Mid-temperature, finely ground and smooth, very plastic, semi-vitreous, dark red brown burning native body for functional ware. These fired bars show the progression of color from cone 4 bottom to cone 8 top. M fires dark red and is the material of choice for dark burning functional ware. It contains more of our native Redstone material than any other body. It is one of several bodies that we process to 60 mesh particle size and is intended to produce ware with a clean, unblemished glaze surface. M is very similar in composition to M and shares the very fine natural smooth character. It is however more plastic. Its darker color tends to limit it to specialized glaze effects. M contains 5 different clays, each of which is quite balanced on its own.
