I am a newbe to the Unity platform. I have been trying to make an application where an Avatar plays the animation from the comming input string.

The animation system in Unity is weight-based and supports Animation Blending, Additive animations, Animation Mixing, Layers and full control over all aspects of playback. If you want to play a walk animation while the player is moving slowly and play the run animation when the player is moving fast you can use the Unity animator to make that switch.
