Paul is just your average hospital nurse, working faithfully to support his wife, Taryn, as the couple prepares for the arrival of their first child. Paul is given a choice: Remove Abe from the hospital and bring him to a hidden location, or his wife dies. Bewildered and panicked, Paul puts his life on the line to protect his wife. And in the space of a few hours, what started as an average night at work becomes a life-or-death battle between mercenaries and corrupt cops—with Paul caught in the crossfire between them. Paul and his wife, Taryn, are a loving couple who cherish their marriage. Paul makes sure that pregnant Taryn is well cared for and loved. This becomes even more evident as Paul goes to great lengths to rescue his wife.

Two great character actors, a fun premise, a director who knows how to execute tight action sequences--sign me up. And then it stops moving. And it all takes place on one crazy night. As Abe Frank Grillo runs with a flash drive in his hand, his brother Mateo Christian Cooke speeds to the scene to pick him up. The two make eye contact just before Abe is hit by another car, and the authorities descend on the scene. Mateo is forced to drive away and Abe is taken to the hospital, first presumed to just be a victim of a crazy car accident. Mateo decides that the best way to get his brother back is to force someone on the inside to do the dirty work for him. Easier said than done, right? We have a ticking clock, especially when Taryn goes into labor. These men know how to make dirty, no-fat action movies.

The tone of what feels, for its first half hour, like a solid action picture, feels off the moment the zingers start-flying. Point Blank features few heart-warming moments in its shoot-and-swear by numbers approach to storytelling. I enjoyed it throughout. And what a rollercoaster of action scenes. A loose remake of the French action-thriller of the same name, Point Blank hits the ground running somewhat literally and attempts to tap into Mackie and Grillo's screen chemistry to deliver a worthwhile buddy film that takes a whole lot of twists and turns in a fairly small amount of time right under 90 minutes, in fact.
