Installing timber decking takes careful planning.

Hi, we've just had a merbau deck built. Interested in thoughts on how soon we should oil it. From what I've read, it seems it's best to let it weather for about weeks before oiling. The deck is exposed and north facing, so gets lots of sun. Not sure of that's a factor in oiling sooner?

Our diverse climate, which ranges from tropical to dry, has created the perfect atmosphere for the archetypical barbeque for which we are so well known. Though there are many different types of timbers available today that can be used to construct timber decking , none are as beautiful, durable, or age as gracefully as merbau.

I've bought some pre-oiled merbau decking wood to build an outdoor tabletop. I plan to cut it to size, drill it where required, then oil it before screwing it all together. The outdoor deck is the quintessential gathering place for Aussies—a place for friends and family to honour birthdays, Christmas, Easter, and any other celebration worth having. Australian hardwood decks are commonly made of Merbau—a smooth hardwood grown in the Southeast Pacific Rim, including Northern Queensland. Merbau contains many natural oils including tannin which protects the wood from splits and cracks. Oil treatments help to enhance this natural protection, block harsh UV rays, and replenish the oils already found in the wood. While many wood treatment products claim to be the best on the market, many of them simply sit on top of the wood.
