Biologically engineered Demi-Gods made by a god-king to help rule the vast brutal universe of Warhammer: 40K, primarcs.

Primarch Sanguinius holding off the armies of Chaos by himself during the Siege of Terra. The Primarchs were the twenty genetically-engineered "sons" of the Emperor of Man. The Emperor used his own DNA in their creation, and they were designed to be gods among men; immortal giants with superhuman physique and intelligence, towering above the Space Marines as they do over mortal men. They were also incredibly charismatic, as their main role was to be generals and leaders of the Imperial military. The Primarchs were created in a secret facility in the Himalayan Mountains under the tightest security. However, the forces of Chaos somehow managed to spirit the infants away just prior to their maturation. They were scattered on different worlds across the galaxy, beyond the Emperor's reach.

Alex Evans. Published: Nov 24, The Warhammer 40k primarchs are immensely powerful Space Marine generals, created by the Emperor of Mankind in the late 30th millennium to lead his armies in the Great Crusade and reconquer the galaxy. In the 41st millennium, some are dead, many lost, and some returned to fight both for and against the Imperium — this guide has the full story. According to sources among the Black Library Horus Heresy novel series and other Games Workshop lore texts, the Emperor originally created 20 Warhammer 40k primarchs in his secret gene-labs under the Himalaya mountain range: one to lead each of his new Space Marine legions. The table below contains background information about all the primarchs — except, of course, the 2nd and 11th — more on them later. Click on a linked primarch or legion name to read our full guide on each. So rehomed, the primarchs grew up on remote worlds, in radically different conditions — some in royal opulence, others in squalor or slavery. All matured unnaturally quickly, many showing genius level intellect as soon as they could speak, and most reaching average cis male adult size by their early teens. Meanwhile, the Emperor and his Custodes bodyguards were searching the galaxy, retrieving the primarchs one by one, telling them of their true origins, and placing them in command of their allotted legions. By around Around a century later, at the beginning of M31, that all changed. If they could get Horus, beloved by all, to turn traitor and lead their rebellion, surely enough other primarchs and their legions would follow? They succeeded.

Theirs will be the strength to prevail, not only when victory lies within easy reach, but even when it seems unattainable, when doom settles like a shroud all about. In those times of darkness, my noble sons will shine the brightest of all. The primarchs were the 20 genetically-engineered transhuman "sons" of the Emperor of Mankind created in the late 30 th Millennium. They were intended to be the immortal and superhuman generals and proconsuls who would command the Emperor's Great Crusade to reunite the scattered Human race beneath His leadership. Their genomes later served as the genetic templates from which the Emperor crafted His 20 Space Marine Legions. The primarchs were bred to be perfect generals, warriors and statesmen; larger, stronger, faster, and smarter than any normal Human could ever hope to be.

Horus , also called Horus Lupercal , or more simply The Lupercal during his lifetime by the Astartes of his Luna Wolves Legion , was one of the 20 genetically-engineered primarchs created by the Emperor of Mankind from the foundation of His own DNA before the start of the Great Crusade to lead the armies of the newborn Imperium of Man. He was also the first Imperial Warmaster , the most favoured son of the Emperor, and ultimately, the greatest traitor in the history of Mankind. Horus' homeworld was the Hive World of Cthonia which lay only a few light years from Terra. Horus was thus the first primarch to be rediscovered by the Emperor after the Great Crusade began in the late 30th Millennium. Horus was responsible for unleashing the horrific civil war known as the Horus Heresy upon the Imperium of Man in the early 31st Millennium which killed billions of men, women and children in pursuit of his mad ambition to overthrow the Emperor of Mankind and replace Him as the ruler of the Human race. While Horus ultimately lost his bid for power and was slain by the father he had once so loved during the Siege of Terra , his actions damaged the Imperium of Man beyond repair and inaugurated the current Age of the Imperium , when Mankind is beset by countless horrific dangers to its existence and the Imperium itself has become a stagnant, repressive, and dehumanising galactic presence. Created as a genetically-engineered organism by the Emperor in the Imperial gene-laboratories under the Himalazian Himalayan Mountains on Terra in the late 30th Millennium, Horus, along with his brother primarchs , were scattered across the Milky Way Galaxy through the Warp by the machinations of the Ruinous Powers of Chaos.

Each of us carries part of our father within us, whether it is his hunger for battle, his psychic talent or his determination to succeed. In the process of creating the Space Marine Legions, the Emperor created twenty clone-sons from his own DNA to serve as templates for the legions. They were scattered across the galaxy by the Chaos Gods in their infancy, to be recovered by the Emperor as the Great Crusade progressed. These posthuman demigods rose to dominate the worlds they landed upon, and each was given command of the Space Marine legion based off his DNA. For a time they stood as humanity's ultimate warriors, but when the Horus Heresy erupted half of them became mankind's greatest foes. In the 41st Millennium they have passed into legend, as the mythic founders of the Imperium and the forefathers of the loyalist First Founding Space Marine chapters.

Dorn is currently dead. The Emperor was aware of Vulkan's regenerative abilities at the time, so the act of saving him was essentially a bit of moral manipulation. He and the scientists of the Imperial Biotechnical Division had already used the samples of genetic material from each of His primarchs to craft the first Astartes gene-seed solar decades before, stem cell zygotes from which had been cultured genetically-engineered organs that, when implanted within a normal, adolescent Human male host, would allow that man to take on many of the physical and mental properties possessed by each primarch. During the Horus Heresy , brother fought brother as the fallen primarchs led their Traitor Legions against their former comrades who remained loyal; Horus himself fought the Blood Angels ' Primarch Sanguinius and the Emperor during the final battle of the great interstellar civil war. Their separate tragedies had seemed like aberrations. Unlike the other Loyalist Primarchs who either died or disappeared almost immediately after the Civil War, Khan was still kicking around a full 70 years after the Horus Heresy. It meant that, when Horus finally sprang his trap in the Isstvan system to kick off the war, loyalist forces were spread far and wide; communications were patchy due to warp storms; and he could successfully lure, trap, and massacre the best part of three entire legions in one day. Unknown even to the primarchs themselves, a vast underground cavern deep beneath the Imperial Palace had been designated as residential quarters for the primarchs. The following is a definitive list of the order in which the primarchs were rediscovered by the Emperor of Mankind during the Great Crusade starting in There Fulgrim grew from a lonely labourer to a leading executive at a mining colony.
