Sign In. Primer Hide Spoilers. Yesterday I watched "Project Almanac" which was also about time travel. The discussion board was full of threads about the temporal paradoxes created in the movie. One thread mentioned movies that did a good job with the time travel theory and "Primer" was mentioned, so here I am. I don't consider myself a dumb or inattentive person; I typically don't need plots spelled out for me and I understood the premise, however, somewhere mid-movie they lost me. Characters were mentioned whom I hadn't heard before and nor did I know their relationship to the main characters. Then it got to the point where I didn't know what time frame they were in or who I was looking at because every time the two main characters went back there would be a double of them. It all just got too confusing; to the point I actually watched it twice to see if I missed something. Even with watching it twice I couldn't quite figure it all out.
All the tricky conundrums that are inevitable in time-travel stories have been avoided by turning the script into a bloody hazy mess. Storyline Edit, primer imdb.

Shane Carruth 's "Primer" opens with four techheads addressing envelopes to possible investors; they seek venture capital for a machine they're building in the garage. They're not entirely sure what the machine does, although it certainly does something. Their dialogue is halfway between shop talk and one of those articles in Wired magazine that you never finish. We don't understand most of what they're saying, and neither, perhaps, do they, but we get the drift. Challenging us to listen closely, to half-understand what they half-understand, is one of the ways the film sucks us in. They steal a catalytic converter for its platinum, and plunder a refrigerator for its freon. Their budget is so small, they could cash the checks on the bus. Aaron and Abe, agreeing that whatever they've invented, they're the ones who invented it, subtly eliminate the other two from the enterprise. They then regard something that looks like an insulated shipping container with wires and dials and coils stuff. This is odd: It secretes protein.

Friends and fledgling entrepreneurs invent a device in their garage which reduces the apparent mass of any object placed inside it, but they discover that it has some highly unexpected capabilities - ones that could enable them to do and to have seemingly anything they want. Taking advantage of this unique opportunity is the first challenge they face. Dealing with the consequences is the next.

All these had their mysteries in discovering what the story was, instead of the simpler case of solving a mystery within the story. Primer just made me annoyed. It looks like something made by someone who had never had a basic cinematography course. Yes, there is a chance that you will NOT like this movie. It seemed as if the things they did could actually happen. Technical specs Edit. Now here, we have something similar. This is not simple entertainment, not even complex entertainment, this is a film that demands true focus and attention, and only then is truly rewarding. But who are they kidding? It's not easy to follow.
Well, the answer to that only Shane Carruth, writer and director of the film, may know, but my best guess is that he had no other choice. So, that limits several liberties that Carruth could have taken if he had more budget — for e.
With the proceeds of this work they fund pet science projects that they hope will yield applications sufficient to attract "VC attention". Aaron's plan for the two of them is to use the invention to win big in the stock market by knowing through the time travel what has happened in the market. It's definitely a must-see, even though I only gave it a 6. See more gaps Learn more about contributing. Two entrepreneurs inadvertently invent a time travel device and then use it to change history again and again and again. I don't know how to feel about this movie. Secondly, he knew very well that the art-house crowd and sci-fi nerds would be watching this ultra-low-budget feast-wannabe - not the popcorn-munching fans of "Twilight" - knowing that this target audience would be too embarrassed to admit that they didn't understand the movie, hence why we have all these positive reviews from people too scared to admit to themselves that they'd just seen 73 minutes of confusing nonsense, let alone admit that to others. Storyline Edit. I was up for hours discussing this movie with friends, and if that's not what you like to do with your movies, then this one probably isn't for you.
