Growing up as a gamer and football fan in the s there were really only two types of people: FIFA fans and Pro Evolution Soccer gamers. The aim was simple: to mould them into a winning team season by season or, at the very least, pro evo master league, accumulate enough funds so you could go out and buy the Emperor in his pomp, Adriano.

Konami's free-to-play eFootball game replaced the Pro Evolution Soccer branding back in , and now it's finally receiving one of the most beloved PES game modes. We're talking, of course, about single player. Love gaming? Listen to our podcast One More Life! When eFootball launched, it didn't have a single-player mode, but now it does — at long last. But there is a catch: the 'Master League' branding has gone, with the new mode having a slightly different name.

Any Pro Evolution Soccer PES fan from the glory days will, upon so much as hearing the words "Pro Evo Master League", break out into an emotional rant about the bonds they formed with the loveable muppets that Konami put into their clubs at the start of the Master League campaign. It was the same for everyone. Pick a team or create your own , pick a league, and enter Division 2 with nothing other than dominant glory on their minds. One little problem, your team was absolute crap. While not blessed with skill or intelligence, this group of players bonded together and left their heart out on the pitch every single game, and we loved them for that. But what has become of the infamous 'PES United' team of ? We at Balls set out to find out. An attack minded team, the two wide-men provided absolutely no cover to the sacrificial lambs at the back, the midfield was an absolute war-zone with total nutters Dodo and Iouga on patrol, but the front three was where the magic happened. Miranda pulled the strings, he wasn't willing to move much, but when he had the ball great things happened, and then the perfect combo of Ordaz and Castolo up front mixed a tempermental, slow-as-shit striker with an Olympic sprinter who clearly had some sort of eye-sight problem. Every last one of them tried their heart out before inevitably being replaced by the likes of Lee Carsley, Quincy Owusu-Abeyie, and Sidney Govou. Suddenly the local lads were replaced with stars sort of , and it all lost a bit of heart. Ivarov was normally the last player replaced in the default Master League team, due to him actually not being that bad. Initially joining Birmingham City as a backup to Maik Taylor, the big Russian goalie returned home to Lokomotiv Moscow where he now continues to work as a goalkeeping coach. Famous for his last ditch challenges after everyone else had given up hope, Valeny was a true soldier.

While the specifics of who they are and how you use them have changed slightly over the years, the basic gist is this: Pro Evo has a game mode called the Master League, where you can take charge of a club and guide them from rags to riches. Playing this way can be torture. These guys are about as bare-bones as it gets. No first names, no prior clubs, no interests. And yet Pro Evo has always had a wonderful progression system where even the worst players can see their stats improve with repeated good play, so sticking with them can have its benefits. They grow to love them.

Pro Evolution Soccer [ official site ] is a fantastic football game, quite possibly one of the best ever. On the pitch, it plays spectacularly well, with both individual players and teams expressing themselves as recognisable entities, and Master League is a superb singleplayer mode, making player development entertaining and simple to grasp. Take it online, though, and things start to fall apart. And the PC port is an ugly downgrade in comparison to the current-gen console versions. In this line of work, there's little more frustrating than having to pummel an excellent game because it fails on a few fundamentals. Pro Evo's PC release deserves a pummelling though. Buy the game on PC and you're getting a version with uglier player models and for me, in these early days at least laggy multiplayer. It's not an abomination, and playing alongside the PS4 version I haven't found the actual flow of the matches any less impressive, but the ageing graphics are immediately noticeable.

In his seminal book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces , American author Joseph Campbell teaches us that all great origin myths and hero stories are dependent on opposites and a transition from the mortal to the divine, eventually returning to the living world to save the day. A year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, on the verge of a move to Real Madrid, in a Portugal jersey, and a post-injuries, year-old Michael Owen in a Newcastle United jersey. Pro Evolution Soccer embodied the spirit of a classic monomyth in its cover image and never erred from it. In the days before online gaming was really a thing and you could still remember what your mates looked like in real life, PES had the greatest feature ever created for a football game. Most of the default lads were distinctly average, some of them were next-level useless, and one of them was a Brazilian hero called Castolo. This is not an online community, this is your world; there were no boundaries. PES is your mate, it always supports you. PES agrees with you, always. Hold on tight.

Equally adept at anchoring the midfield or playing at full-back, Brazilian hard-man Dodo was a complete and utter nut-job.
