The trial of Shawn Purvis is underway in Cumberland County Court, with the first prosecution witnesses called to the stand Thursday morning. Purvis is the home improvement company owner charged with two counts of manslaughter for the death of Alan Loignon, a roofer who was not wearing a safety harness when he fell from a three-story house in Portland's East End. Loignon's fiancee, Kristina Huff, the mother of Loignon's two daughters, now 10 and 4, described Loignon as a hard-working man. She said they had dated since high school where he was a two-time state wrestling champion. Huff told the jury the lack of safety gear was a "major worry" of hers that Purvis had "dismissed. Huff also testified that Loignon and his coworkers often smoked marijuana on the job, that she considered that "probably not the smartest thing to do," but she couldn't say that Purvis disapproved. After Loignon's fall, witnesses said, he suffered a skull fracture and had no pulse. A Maine Medical Center doctor testified that she tried to save Loignon but pronounced him dead after 10 minutes in the emergency room. He is contesting the fines.
