Any recommendations of areas that are good to watch and photograph trains? I was thinking of checking out Williams and Maine so far. Any other good suggestions? Thank you! Go east of Flagstaff on route 66 to the highway bridge that goes over tracks. Park on the south-east side of road leading up to the bridge facing the tracks. Be sure to not park on any part of the bridge since parking on bridges is not legal. When you park make sure you can see trains in both directions. Be sure to bring food and drinks and a scanner. Get there just as the sun comes up and leave when the sun goes down. You will not miss any trains and you will get lots of great photos. The best time of year for just sitting at the bridge all day is from mid September to mid April.

Westbound Train 3 is scheduled into Flagstaff late evening, and eastbound Train 4 is scheduled into Flagstaff in early morning. Unless it's changed in the 8 years or so since I've been there it was a really nice place to have a seat and view the action. A few years ago we went to the Walnut Creek cliff dwellings As long as you are in the Flagstaff area, why not drive a short distance west to Williams and catch the Grand Canyon railroad? Even if moving means you risk missing a train or two, it's not like you're going to miss a solid set of Warbonnets leading a hot shooter these days. But do be aware that the UP is running some detours that way right now because of track work on the Sunset Route, so try to keep track of where those might be if that change-up is of interest. Unfortunately, they're pretty unpredictible when they run. Any suggestions, or does it go right thru security? I am not to sure about day time operations as I am usually at work, but in the evening, I have a pretty good idea. The doube track main can get real busy. You should carry it in your carry-on luggage rather than in your checked luggage to avoid damage in case the luggage is mishandled roughly or the flight is turbulent.
