The current champion is Iyo Sky , who is in her first reign. Charlotte Flair , then known simply as Charlotte, was the inaugural champion. The title was the first women's championship to headline a WWE pay-per-view and livestreaming event , which occurred at Hell in a Cell in It also headlined WWE's only all-female event, Evolution in The championship was established on April 3, The inaugural champion was determined by a triple threat match between Charlotte, Becky Lynch , and Sasha Banks later that night, which was originally scheduled for the Divas Championship. Following the reintroduction of the brand split in July , reigning champion Charlotte was drafted to the Raw brand, making the championship exclusive to Raw. As a result of the WWE Draft , the Raw and SmackDown women's championships switched brands and there were no title changes for either championship before draft results went into effect on May 8. The championship was the first women's title to be defended in the main event of a WWE pay-per-view and livestreaming event , which was at Hell in a Cell in October ; this was also the first-ever women's Hell in a Cell match and the first women's match to main event a WWE pay-per-view and livestreaming event. At the event, Charlotte whose ring name was lengthened to Charlotte Flair defeated Sasha Banks to become a three-time champion. Lynch announced that she was forfeiting the title due to pregnancy and announced the Money in the Bank match winner, Asuka, as the new champion.

Following the reintroduction of the brand split in July , the title became exclusive to Raw and was renamed as the Raw Women's Championship after SummerSlam in August when SmackDown created the SmackDown Women's Championship as a counterpart title. As a result of the WWE Draft , the championships switched brands. The championship is generally contested in professional wrestling matches , in which participants execute scripted finishes rather than contend in direct competition. After missing Belair with a mist attempt earlier in the match, Asuka spit the mist onto her hand and rubbed it in the champion's face during a K. While Asuka used her new persona to get inside Belair's head at times leading up to The Show of Shows, their rivalry was largely friendly, as they were both popular babyfaces. In an entertaining back-and-forth match, The EST prevailed and retained the title, keeping her undefeated 'Mania record intact. On the May 12 edition of SmackDown, a championship celebration was held in Belair's home state of Tennessee to celebrate her holding the Raw women's title for over days consecutively. Asuka made her return by interrupting, and while it initially looked as though she was there to congratulate Belair, she instead turned heel by spewing blue mist into her eyes. Belair screamed in agony after the attack, and Asuka later revealed she had used a new formula with hot chili pepper infused into it. The EST looked to exact revenge at Night of Champions, but Asuka came out on top and has now held a singles title on four occasions on the main roster. One of two women to win at a WrestleMania main event, Belair's day reign as Raw Women's Champion [a] stands as the longest in the championship's history. She also has the longest reign of any WWE women's championship since , with WWE promoting her as the longest-reigning women's champion of the modern era. This reign would break a couple of other records within WWE, including the longest-reigning black world champion male or female and the longest-reigning African American for any singles championship.
