Like, a year ago late first seeing the excellent anime and then read the manga from there on through. I came to learn and love the characters, and started to invest in the series and then I saw how terrible a coach Komogawa is and sadly, how ultimately terrible Ippo had become as a protagonist. You can argue all day about his training, hard work and dedication making him a good protagonist but he failed in the end with a series by design meant for him to succeed through said, training, hard work and dedication.

Ippo Makunouchi is an average and overly-shy high school teenager. His mother runs a fish boat shop and he constantly has to help her with it, and thus has no friends. Constantly bullied because of this, Ippo wonders what it would be like to be strong. Takamura sees potential in Ippo, and brings him into Kamogawa Gym. With a fighting spirit, can Ippo eventually become a professional boxer? Hajime no Ippo is centered on boxing, so similarly, the art is also centered on the fights. Morikawa has probably perfected the drawing of boxing to a degree I doubt anyone could do it better. All the fights are very stylistic, and very exciting. Character art has steadily transitioned through the series such that at the beginning everything was somewhat rounder faces, noses, eyes , but at this point it resembles what one might be more accustomed to seeing in other current mangas sharper noses, longer faces, taller characters. Backgrounds tend to be training areas, gyms, the occasional forests and beaches, but this does not detract from the series at all.

Maybe not what a lot of fans wanted to happen but still. I understand that Morikawa has been sick and this by all accounts points to the end of this manga in the remaining chapters to come, but he could've and honestly should've let Ippo use his new Dempsey Roll, win and retire. Summary : Makunouchi Ippo has been bullied his entire life. Constantly running errands and being beaten up by his classmates, Ippo has always dreamed of changing himself, but never has the passion to act upon it. It seems obvious that Morikawa spoke through Ippo with him looking at the coach and us and apologizing, accepting that he was broken and wouldn't make it to the world stage as a sendoff to fans that he wouldn't be able to finish the manga. As anticlimactic as it may have been, at least something interesting happened. We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.
