In our newbie RotRL campaign, we recently came across of Ring of Spell Storing and we are having some trouble figuring out who exactly can use it. Which of the following scenarios is feasible under this description note the bolded part: A. A level 5 wizard imbues it with fireball and uses the ring to cast fireball. A level 5 wizard imbues it with fireball and a level 1 fighter uses the ring to cast fireball. A is clearly possible. C is what I have interpreted from reading other threads and what has been referenced from the general history of the item in past versions as well as the explanation for the relatively large cost relative to say, 3 level 1 pearls of power. Any thoughts on the correct use of this item?

A ring of spell storing was a magic ring that stored a number of spells. As the name suggested, a ring of spell storing stored spells for later use. To store a spell, the spellcaster simply cast the spell as normal, but targeted to the ring, and the spell remained intact within it. The spell could then be released and fully cast by anyone who wore the ring. This allowed a spellcaster to prepare a spell for a non-spellcaster, or cast a spell from a scroll into the ring for later use. Multiple spellcasters, and both arcane and divine casters, could have spells in a single ring of spell storing. Different spells were stored according to the type of ring. A minor ring of spell storing stored only a few spells, such as either three simple spells, or one minor spell and two simple spells. A standard ring of spell storing stored more spells and those of intermediate power, and a major ring of spell storing stored far more spells and those only a master mage could typically cast. Along with the skill to craft magic rings, a creator required the imbue with spell ability spell.

Proceed at your own risk! The ring holds spells cast into it until an attuned wearer casts that spell again, holding up to 5 levels of spells at a single time. Any creature may cast a 1st- to 5th-level spell into the ring by touching the ring while casting; the spell does not take effect but is stored, unless the ring cannot hold it, in which case the spell is cast without any effect. This ring stores spells cast into it, holding them until the attuned wearer uses them. The ring can store up to 5 levels worth of spells at a time. When found, it contain 1d6 - 1 levels of stored spells chosen by the DM. Any creature can cast a spell of 1st through 5th level into the ring by touching the ring as the spell is cast. The spell has no effect, other than to be stored in the ring. If the ring can't hold the spell, the spell is expended without effect. The level of the slot used to cast the spell determines how much space it uses. While wearing this ring, you can cast any spell stored in it. The spell uses the slot level, spell save DC, spell attack bonus, and spellcasting ability of the original caster, but is otherwise treated as if you cast the spell. The spell cast from the ring is no longer stored in it, freeing up space.
