As a fan of the genre, I keep an eye out for any new romantic comedies, and this year, there are a handful. There are even several that are great, and even for the ones that are not as great, they still have plenty of appeal, if you, like me, will never give up on these movies. Brace yourself for Lake Bell with a British accent, but once you get past that, Man Up is the latest in a long tradition of irreverent, sweet, British romantic comedies. Simon Pegg is a man we all love but rarely see as a leading man, but you'll crush on him after seeing this. This comedy may have just looked like a high school comedy trying to recapture the magic of Mean Girls. The "duff" herself, Bianca Mae Whitman gets schooled on how not be a duff by popular jock Wes Robbie Amell , and in the grand rom-com tradition, their initial hatred turns to attraction. Ever since Shakespeare's Midnight Summers Dream , audiences have been captivated by light, funny stories of people in love that can't seem to get it right until the last moment, when they will undoubtedly end up together. In their prime romantic comedies became staples in the 90s and early s Hollywood. Audiences came in droves to see their favorite actresses and actors fall in love on the big screen. The chemistry between the leads and the sincerity of the stories made audiences swoon. However, by the late s, the audience's love affair with rom-coms faded as they started to feel like paint by numbers. With the rise of the big spectacle comic-book movies, theatrically released romantic comedies are becoming increasingly scarce.

On television and in film, creators have been granted the freedom to upend traditional expectations for the genre. Glossy candlelit love scenes are out, replaced by rawer and more naturalistic depictions of sex. Happy endings, too, have given way to bittersweet conclusions and melancholy. And while there are still plenty of projects about good-looking white people falling in love in New York, the explosion of creative outlets available has also led to new voices and new kinds of romances. This award-winning indie about a chaotic wedding reception gone wrong, innovative storytelling techniques elevate it beyond the rest of its contemporaries. If anything, this film leaves the viewer happy, which is what romantic comedies should do. A girl falls for the "perfect" guy, who happens to have a very fatal flaw: he's a hitman on the run from the crime cartels who employ him. Ove, an ill-tempered, isolated retiree who spends his days enforcing block association rules and visiting his wife's grave, has finally given up on life just as an unlikely friendship develops with his boisterous new neighbors. While there is a plot, director Judd Apatow makes plenty of time for lazy scenes of something slackers hanging out. Ironically, it's the people like Alex who love Max for who he is that don't die after looking at him, making this almost an anti-teen romance film. There are enough TV romantic comedies that speak to the universal parts of falling in and out of love. Desperate for a good story, a sex-addicted journalist throws himself into the world of high-class escorts when he starts following a Stanford-educated prostitute. Maggie wants to have a baby, raising him on her own, but when she gets romantically involved with John, a married man, things get complicated and all the balance of Maggie's plans may collapse.
