In Japan it has been available for more than a year. The plastic version is now officially distributed in the UK and other countries, while the successor, the new Kuru Toga pencil, is already available in Japan. My first surprise, when I saw the packaging, was that the advantages of the Kuru Toga Engine were not advertised as much as I expected. For the designers who created the packaging the Nano Dia leads seem to be nearly as big a selling point as the Kuru Toga Engine. Yes, nano is a buzzword see PhD Comics and diamonds sound very precious, but instead of just throwing numbers and cool words at customers I would have preferred an explanation why having million nano diamonds in a lead is an advantage and how that helps to deliver super strength and a smooth, crisp line. Using the Kuru Toga for writing was a big disappointment.

The Uni Kuru Toga mechanical pencil and its new mechanism solves a serious problem for every mechanical pencil user. When you write by using a regular mechanical pencil, the lead only wears down on one side, becoming a slanted wedge-shaped tip. This will cause a terrible feeling when you are writing or drawing and variations in line thickness on your paper. The Uni Kuru Toga mechanical pencil brings a revolutionary change for solving this problem. With the "Lead Rotation" mechanism inside, the pencil is able to sharpen the lead by continually rotating the lead every time you lift the tip from the paper. So the lead will be kept in a conical tip shape that provides a smooth writing or drawing and consistent lines on your paper. Good design with comfortable grip. Well constructed but instructions not in English. Great pencil! Beautifully made, very fun to expirement with drawing and writing.
