Gnome Child is a type of non-player character featured in the massively multiplayer online roleplaying video game Runescape that has gained notoriety for its tendencies to respond with bizarre and philosophical quotes when approached by the player. On December 12th, , Runescape was updated with several new features, maps and non-player characters NPCs , most notably a group of youthful gnomes who could be found in the Tree Gnome Stronghold. On June 21st, , a player by the name of rsmv2you now known simply as "Rsmv" posted a screenshot of the gnome child's dialogue with the message "Gnomes are horrible parents". Another player, Urotsuki, saw that the frame of animation the gnome's face was on looked funny, and quickly cropped the face, resized it so that the height was pixels, and replied to the post with it. Meanwhile, YouTuber Flopske uploaded a video titled "Gnome Child," featuring Runescape gameplay footage in which Gnome Child discusses the existence of God before being attacked and killed shown below. In December , an audio clip of the kill streak announcer from the Halo video game series saying the phrase "slayer" accompanied by a thumbnail of a Gnome Child in the style of Tony Kornheiser's 'Why' shown below by user Mirakurutaimu began circulating on Tumblr.

Every afternoon when I got home from school I'd rush through the door, scattering my things on the floor, and pound down the stairs to the basement on a beeline towards the family computer. After five minutes of the dial-up modem doing its thing and another fifteen minutes to load into the game, I had a whole new world at my fingertips. Time was of the essence as every moment I spent in Gielinor was a moment that my mother couldn't spend on the phone talking to her sisters. Due to the obscene loading times our prehistoric computer and early-internet dial-up provided, world-hopping wasn't an option. I was locked into whatever world I selected on the day. This meant that killing chickens and cows for their feathers and hides big loot back in the day had to be done on an entirely different playing session than when I went to trade them at the Varrock North Bank on World 2. Progress was slow and inefficient in those days, even for a game where level 92 is only half the experience you need to get to level Min-maxing wasn't a phrase that had even occurred to us and even getting a full set of Rune Plate Armor was a flippin' big deal. We'd almost never venture into the Wildy with gear for fear of losing weeks worth of work. But I'll be damned if those weren't some of the best days of gaming I ever had. As we aged the game did too, and it became more about min-maxing experience gains, training up pures for PVP, and hoarding some actually good loot. The game entered, and then quickly passed, a golden ageā¦ With the introduction of a slew of updates that would take the game in new directions and tear the community asunder. A classic rewind of the golden era of the game that receives active development to take it in new "What If?

After B0aty's defeat in the game, the number inspired remix videos and jokes online and in RuneScape communities. In , the Twitch streamers B0aty and Skill Specs fought each other in a death match on stream, during which B0aty confidently states that Skill Specs would not be able to inflict enough damage to wipe out his remaining health and kill him. Immediately after the remark, Skill Specs inflicts 73 damage points in one attack and kills him. Following this, he bursts into laughter while B0aty can be heard in the background commenting in disbelief at what just occurred. On July 2nd, , a video was uploaded to Skill Specs' YouTube channel, which shows the entire fight from his point of view. As of December , it has been viewed over , times. Following the event, the number 73 became associated with B0aty and to a lesser extent with Skill Specs , and has spawned phrases which are used to express joy and disbelief at seeing it, even when the context is not directly related to the fight. Videos have been created about the event, including compilations of the number occurring and edits of the fight.
