Sauron mtg
The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth is Magic: the Gathering 's newest and best Universes Beyond project, populated with dozens of legendary characters and monsters from J. Tolkien's original novel trilogy. This includes the supervillain Sauron himself, and he appears not once, but four times in Tales of Middle-earth overall. Sauron is the most powerful and memorable character in this product, and his four cards are all impressive. All of them are worth using in the Commander format, but each has its own strengths and weaknesses that will drastically alter how it performs as a commander or in the It has menace to help it push damage, and its attack trigger is like a variant of Eternalize from the Hour of Devastation set. Then, on the end step, that token is exiled unless Sauron, the Necromancer is the player's Ring-bearer according to the set's "the Ring tempts you" mechanic. Sauron, the Necromancer is one of two Sauron cards in Tales of Middle-earth that makes great use of the graveyard, rewarding the player for using discard effects, self-mill, and the like to stock up their graveyard with powerful creatures with relevant abilities. Conveniently, the Ring's temptation means the Ring-bearer may draw and then discard a card when that creature attacks and some other Tales of Middle-earth cards such as the mighty Witch-King of Angmar also discard cards for their effects, giving Sauron more corpses to work with. However, while Sauron, the Necromancer benefits hugely from the Ring's temptation effect, this creature never actually causes the Ring to tempt the player, so it really needs the right deck to shine. Sauron's "enter the battlefield" effect is a classic Threaten effect, taking control of an opponent's creature, untapping it, and giving it haste until end of turn. This ability is great for go-wide decks, such as Goblin aggro decks or even Zombie decks, and making all opponents lose 2 life will let the player slowly but surely grind their way to victory. Sauron, the Lidless Eye is a straightforward card with decent power, though its flavor is rather weak and its abilities are only mediocre for a legendary creature of this caliber. A single Threaten ETB effect can help turn the tide of a limited game, but it's situational and falls flat in multiplayer Commander games.
Sauron's Ring temptation effect should be roughly the same in Commander as in 1v1 games, while the Ward effect is surprisingly weak in the legend-heavy Tales of Middle-earth set. Oracle Printed.
