Sham, right, finished second. I mean that sometimes I feel like Sham, the horse. Fifty years ago this week, Sham ran the second-fastest time ever at the Kentucky Derby. In the five decades since then, no horse has been faster. And yet, casual fans of racing — and I am no more than a barely casual fan — have likely never heard of Sham. Part of that is because people who compile online lists are, for lack of a better term, underintelligent.

With Sham sort of back in the spotlight again, I went back to a column I wrote on the colt and felt enough years had passed to re-work and re-edit it by adding new material and tell his story once again even more comprehensively. This was a gross injustice to a Hall of Fame trainer and a brave, brilliant colt. Martin was 84 when the movie was released and his glory days were well behind him. Many had forgotten just what an outstanding trainer he was and the amazing success he had with the Sommer horses. Sham had been dead for seven years and was pretty much remembered as the horse with superstar potential who had the misfortune to come along in the wrong year. So, as a new generation of racing fans flocked to theaters to see Secretariat come to life on the big screen, many were unaware of the numerous liberties taken by Disney to appeal to the masses. This was not only unfair to Martin, but to his family. His late son Jose and grandson Carlos were both terrific horsemen and successful trainers in their own right. While Jose trained major stars such as Groovy and Noble Nashua and others, Carlos is still waiting for that one big horse, but retains the same enthusiasm and love of horses he showed growing up at the barn with his father. Even poor Sham, who suffered enough by coming along the same year as Secretariat, was portrayed as the equine villain, much as the infamous Postman was in the movie Kentucky. Even in the movie Seabiscuit , War Admiral came across as the evil antagonist, miraculously growing from Secretariat remains the standard by which all great horses are measured, and he continues to transcend the sport of Thoroughbred racing, being mentioned by President-elect Donald Trump in his victory speech. When Trump mentioned that had Secretariat finished second there would be no bronze statue of him at Belmont Park, he might as well have been referring to Sham.

Sham April 9, — April 3, was an American thoroughbred race horse and leading three year-old in , who was overshadowed by his more famous peer, Secretariat. Sham was dark bay, almost black in color. He raced in the green and yellow silks of his owners, Sigmund and Viola Sommer, with matching blinkers. His running style was that of a stalker, preferring to run behind the early leaders and gradually improving his position nearing the finish. Sham was a large horse at Linda's Chief, with Braulio Baeza up, was assigned post 5 and was sent off the favorite.

Will any of them mention Sham? A son of Pretense might only naturally be called Sham. By the clock, Sham would have won every other Kentucky Derby contested at a mile and a quarter. Through Derbies, Secretariat and Sham remain the only entrants who ever came in under two minutes. He was the particular pet of Bull Hancock, master of Claiborne Farm, who bred a number of eminences during his fabled career but never had a Derby horse of his own.

But the other reason is that, even with his blazing speed, poor Sham finished his amazing race two and a half lengths behind Secretariat. Sham had the exceptional misfortune to have to run against him in race after race. Sham finished an impressive four lengths ahead of Secretariat.
