Unofficially the former leader of the Visored and the current Captain of the 5th Division in Bleach , Shinji Hirako is one of the greatest assets to the Gotei 13 and Soul Society as a whole. Known for his snide, sarcastic, and unfiltered persona, as well as his impeccable strength as a Shinigami, Shinji is one of a select few in the Gotei 13 who can transcend the limits of a Shinigami and acquire the powers of a Hollow. This was in part due to his involvement in the Hollowfication Incident, orchestrated by his former Lieutenant Sosuke Aizen. Praised for his power, charisma, and tactical acumen, he naturally grew into the role of leading the Visored, who offered vital aid to Ichigo Kurosaki and their former comrades in the Gotei 13, during their victory over Aizen and his Arrancar in the Battle of Fake Karakura Town. Besides his raw strength and proficiency at the various combat skills practiced by Shinigami in Bleach , Shinji also possesses a few unique abilities stemming from his Zanpakuto and Hollow mask, which put him in a league of his own. But how strong is he exactly?

Shinji has brown eyes and jaw-length blonde hair with a straight cut and many of his facial expressions reveal his upper teeth. While attempting to recruit Ichigo, he wears a standard Karakura school uniform, though he usually wears trousers, shirt and tie, often supplemented by a newsboy cap and long-coat. Shinji appears to have a round ring pierced in the middle of his tongue. During his first tenure as a captain, before he left the Soul Society , his hair was very long, reaching down to the lower part of his back. Sometime before the Wandenreich 's invasion of Soul Society, Shinji adds a further white robe between his haori and uniform, which is fastened at the front. His tie is also replaced by a broader cravat that is tucked under his new robe and is clasped using a small, silver slide. Shinji is somewhat comical, adding a bit of levity to situations that are otherwise serious, normally speaking in a Kansai dialect. He has a flippant attitude under normal circumstances and seems to like annoying his associate, Hiyori Sarugaki , which usually earns him a slap from one of her sandals.

In a recent Bleach episode, specifically in episode 16 of the Thousand-Year Blood War arc episode in the overall Bleach series , one of the captains of Gotei 13, Shinji Hirako, finally unleashed his bankai. Shinji is one of the new faces within the captain rank, therefore this is the first time we have ever seen his Bankai. While the appearance is not that exuberant, or even memorable for that matter, it certainly has one of the most interesting abilities compared to the other bankai. As the name suggests, Sakasema no Sekai has the ability to create an Inverted World. However, rather than reshaping the real world, this is actually an ability that can affect the perception of living beings around the user. When activated, Sakasema no Sekai will release a colorless and odorless scent that will affect those who are unfortunate enough to breathe-in the scent.

Hirako Shinji is the Visored that Bleach fans are the best acquainted with; however, viewers who have only joined the gang in the Thousand Year Blood War may be in the dark about the significance of these Shinigami-hybrids. Initially introduced in the Turn Back the Pendulum Arc, the Visored have subsequently slipped into the sidelines for the most part, but that may all change now that Yhwach and his Sternritter are in the picture. Seireitei will have to call upon all its allies if it hopes to survive, and Shinji has witnessed firsthand how brutal their latest adversaries truly are. The Visored are essentially antithetical to the Arrancar, as they are Shinigami-born soldiers with Hollow elements, and can therefore tap into both sets of powers to produce some incredible results. The former high-ranking members of the Gotei 13 Captains and Lieutenants still have access to their Zanpakuto and Kido skills while receiving a boost of energy when their Hollow masks get revealed; however, according to Seireitei's standards, the Visored are impure and unwanted. Since combining Shinigami and Hollows is considered taboo, the Visored are ostracized from society and labeled as unlawful traitors by no fault of their own. Each of the eight Visored has a unique design to their Hollow mask that represents their individual characteristics and gives a slight indication of their favored fighting styles. The Visored can only don their skeletal accessories for a limited amount of time, the average span lasting for three minutes, although it varies from person to person. Mashiro Kuna, for example, can maintain her Hollowfication consistently for up to fifteen hours due to the exceptional bond she shares with the dark spirit within.
