We recently found this cool project by Brooke from Austin, Texas using Sani-Tred to seal a shipping container to make a backyard swimming pool or a DIY temporary pool. We have treated it, as we posted previously, like an inside out ship: rust is part of our expectation and freaking out about a few spots is not our game. I built the shipping container swimming pool originally with a 1 hp pump, a zeobrite sand filter, and a natural gas heater. From a pool design nerd perspective, I have really wrestled with how to get the plumbing to better mimic a normal in-ground pool. So I decided to put no main drain in the bottom of the pool… it was a best guess that it might break off with shifting and leave us with a very hard to fix major leak. That said, I needed a way to pull water back to the pump, and I was super afraid to cut too many holes in the container.

First, you need to determine the location of your pool. The ideal spot would be at least 10 feet away from any structures and fences. A good rule of thumb is to place it at least 20 feet from the house and 10 feet from other objects. If your property has a slope or incline, you may consider placing it on an elevated area or a concrete slab for safety reasons. Next, you need to consider where water will be collected when it rains and how that water will drain away from where you plan to place your container pool. For example, if there are no gutters or proper plumbing nearby, there could be flooding issues when heavy rains come through. Getting the necessary permits from your local government before building a container pool or buying a shipping container pool kit is important.

Recently we spoke to Nigel Butcher, the company Sales Manager to get some more information about their design and manufacturing process. The container pools are sold in two sizes, 20FT and 40FT and by offering only one mould shape the company are able to keep manufacturing costs down. The reason the pools are designed this way is simply cost savings. The company are using brand new one trip containers and then cutting them in half to make two four feet deep pools from one single container. The free standing mould has the strength to hold the weight of the water, so it could be placed onto the ground and be filled with water without the support of the container to hold it in place. In this case the container just acts as a protective shell. The fiberglass mould pool design was developed thirty years ago and has been used by the Australian company most commonly for in ground swimming pool applications. At those prices a DIY container pool looks much more appealing. For most of us building a fiberglass swimming pool mould is beyond our skill level, so how about just buying a shipping container, cutting the roof off and filling it with water?
