You have to use the most recent version. But if you use the self-installer, it should install to the correct place. Also BOSS has been superseded by a new utility. I have not played Skrim since about February, , so you'd be better of going to the Nexus forums. But many of the best mods or certainly the larger and more complex mods require SKSE, the Skyrim Script Extender, so better use can be made of Papyrus. But many people say it is complex to install. Totally recommended. SkyUI changes the interface to be so much more PC-friendly - unless you have a controller and can make the default interface work.
