This page lists all the ammunition arrows for bows and bolts for crossbows available in Skyrim. Arrows are the required ammunition for bows. Arrows cannot be enchanted or tempered. Unless the Dawnguard add-on has been installed, arrows cannot be created at forges. However, with Dawnguard, it becomes possible to craft standard arrows using 1 piece of firewood plus an appropriate metal ingot.

I have experimented with this quite a bit, since reading about it, and have found that I can have them doing a lot of damage, if I keep them using iron arrows and an Elven bow, rather than having them default to a plain old hunting bow, because I tried to give them Elven arrows.
