I'm pretty late to the party. All I can say is that everything I have played thus far from Zeppelin to Wagner, sounds pretty great. I wish to next start reading up on various cartridges and the difference they may or may not have on my humble ear. The arm is without play and not as heavy as other earlier Japanese arms. It works well with all cartridges I tested. If the speed potentiometer is cleaned, the drive is very smooth.

The Technics SL-D2 turntable is very common and is a great table for those just starting to explore the vinyl universe. It is semi-automatic and features both auto-return and auto-stop. It came with a universal tubular tonearm with a removable headshell. Not bad for a good quality table if you were on a budget. Even today they are very good performers if taken care of. They do tend to have problems with the pitch control or speed but usually just a cleaning of the potentiometer will fix it. The plinth is made of Technics Non Resonant Compound which is a resin material that is noticeably quieter than some of the cheaper plastic plinths Technics used on other tables. The Sl-D2 is a workhorse of a turntable and, when taken care of, will play reliably for years. It is a little sensitive to vibration so either some aftermarket performance feet or dampening might help. Anything that will isolate it from outside vibration would help. The Technics SL-D2 is not a high end turntable but it is great for someone on a budget or who is just entering the hobby.

If it's a moving magnet cartridge you'll need a dedicated moving magnet turntable input marked MM , but if you have a low-output moving coil cartridge you'll need a moving coil input marked MC. If you're happy that the receiver input is of the correct type and working then it only leaves the cartridge or wiring? Hi, You'll need to connect the turntable to a 'moving magnet phono' input to equalise the cartridge signal and boost it to line level - if your amp doesn't have a turntable input you could buy an-line preamp just do a search on google for phono preamp.

This turn table has out-lived five cassette decks and four CD players! I then saw the 78 mod for the SL D2 and bought one of them from eBay to adapt it to pay 78s. If it's still got the original cartridge in it just do a google search for 'Technics EPCC stylus' and several suppliers will show up. The AT95E is a better bet. It is a very fine table for the price.
