The Sony RX1R II takes what made the original so remarkable -- compact size, full-frame sensor and stunning image quality -- and takes it up to a new, even more impressive level. The image quality, at both low and high ISOs, is just as fantastic, if not more so, thanks to the big resolution increase. Plus, the nifty variable low-pass filter technology adds flexibility and convenience. Not all of us can justify the expense of a fixed-lens camera with a pricetag of several thousand dollars, even if it does sport a full-frame image sensor. So how do you top those cameras? The answer, it seems, is to combine them into a single model offering the best of both worlds, courtesy of a groundbreaking new variable low-pass filtering function. If you switch back and forth between, say, shooting landscapes where you want to gather every last detail, and shooting man-made subjects with lots of high-frequency detail, we really can't overstate this: Variable low-pass filtering could be quite revolutionary for your photography.

Now, with the introduction of the Sony RX1R II, Sony's uber-premium compact camera takes a big leap forward with nearly double the pixel count, vastly improved autofocus performance, and a rather innovative adjustable optical low-pass filter system. As mentioned, the predecessors' image quality was excellent, and that is still true with this new model, but even more so. With a megapixel backside-illuminated full-frame sensor, the camera packs in even more resolving power. Image quality is fantastic, particularly at low to moderate ISO's straight out of the camera. Furthermore, as is characteristic of recent Sony cameras, the dynamic range performance from the RX1R II is outstanding. One of the all-new features of this camera is its unique variable optical low-pass filter. Unlike the predecessor, which was offered in two models -- one with an OLPF and one without -- the Sony RX1R II lets you adjust the strength of an actual optical low-pass filter, or disable it completely. The system works very well. Images do indeed show increased detail when not using the OLPF, and if you can't decide which filter setting to choose for a given subject, the camera includes an OLPF bracketing mode! While overall, the lens is nice and sharp, we did find noticeable vignetting if in-camera shading correction is turned off the camera also bakes-in vignetting correction to RAWs, so keep that in mind if you like to do you own corrections.

This makes for a smooth transition between using the screen and the finder, and more akin to using a traditional camera. The aperture ring has numerical markings for each aperture stop, and lines for the third stops in between. As you turn the aperture ring, it clicks which is quite satisfying, but could have an impact on sound for video. So, for instance, if you were shooting in shutter priority, the aperture ring has no use. These can be set to a number of different functions, such as ISO or white balance, but you can also change the functions of the four directional keys, the central button, the AEL button and the scrolling dial around the central button. Also on the back of the camera is a small scrolling dial which is used for altering shutter speed when using the camera in manual or shutter priority.

The high-resolution sensor, the addition of the viewfinder and the variable optical low pass filter are great features; but there are enough reasonably small niggles to add up to a less than perfect offering. Why you can trust Digital Camera World Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out how we test. Eight years on, it is now one of a very select band of full-frame compact cameras — and still has features that make it stand out from other fixed lens cameras. Sony has stuck with the classic 35mm focal length as with its very similar predecessor the RX1R, and this wide-angle focal length is versatile for landscapes, portraits, architecture and street photography. Viewfinder : 0. As the screen is not touch-sensitive, each control must be adjusted physically: aperture is altered using a ring around the lens, while exposure compensation can be adjusted via a dedicated dial. Colours are beautifully saturated too. Image processing and zooming to check critical focus are also slow because of the large file sizes. The amount of fine detail the RX1R II is capable of resolving is absolutely superb, but uncompressed raw files can be around 80MB each.

Luckily, the batteries are small enough and relatively inexpensive that it's easy to carry a bunch of spares. Sony A7 III. The system works very well. Unlike the predecessor, which was offered in two models -- one with an OLPF and one without -- the Sony RX1R II lets you adjust the strength of an actual optical low-pass filter, or disable it completely. In the majority of conditions, the RXR II's general purpose metering system creates well-exposed images, but you may have to deal in a little exposure compensation if you're photographing something particularly high in contrast. The Sony RX1R II takes what made the original so remarkable -- compact size, massive full-frame sensor and stunning image quality -- and takes it up to a new, even more impressive level. The image quality, at both low and high ISOs, is just as impressive, if not more so, thanks to the big resolution increase. Plus, the nifty variable low-pass filter technology adds flexibility and convenience. What's not present any more, though, is the built-in, pop-up flash of the earlier cameras. In fact, the original RX1 didn't have continuous AF capabilities for still images at all! In the right hands, however, images shot at 35mm can be downright stunning; it's just not for me and for what I like to shoot most of the time.

And that's not the only firmware change, either. Print quality and image quality are similar but not identical, because what you see on a print isn't always the same as what you see on the screen. Screen Type 7. The aperture ring has numerical markings for each aperture stop, and lines for the third stops in between. In fact, the original RX1 didn't have continuous AF capabilities for still images at all! One thing they always tried to predict was technology, and usually it was way over the top. Sony A Having 42 megapixels to play with is great news for cropping, and of course detail resolution, however, it also results in huge file sizes. This works using distinct phase-detection autofocus points on the image sensor, and in informal testing at the New York press event at which the camera was launched, it seemed both responsive and reasonably swift.
