My life has done a total in the past six months. I recently got divorced, my mother moved in with me and my daughter, and I started a new job. Of all the changes, the one I am having to adjust to the most is living under the same roof with my mother, believe it or not. I have vivid memories of growing up and being hit with cords, shoes and tree branches. It was nothing for my mother to grab me up by the crook of my elbow and wear me out in the middle of a grocery store aisle in front of everyone. She feels as though I have become worn out on life and parenting. As a result, she feels that I am allowing my 6-year-old to get away with things that never would have gotten by my mother when I was coming up.

Growing up there were two main punishments me and my cousins received if we acted up: timeout, or a spanking. Sometimes our moms threatened us with spanking using a "chancla" sandal , a belt, or by hand. Given a choice between the two, I always preferred to be spanked by my mom. Timeout was awful. At the time, I never really realized the impact not letting me choose the consequences for bad behaviors would have on me. Though I did get to choose — the lesser of three evils — I sometimes what would've happened if I had authority over my own behaviors and got to have a say in what I should have to do without because of the way I'd acted. Spanking, or no spanking? Timeout, or no timeout? Right now, we are very firmly a no-spanking household, but my husband and I are big on timeouts and taking a moment to acknowledge bad behavior.
