Please select the appropriate options below to determine the correct size bias lighting for your displays. You should round up to this size bias light you can round down at your discretion if the actual and rounded measurements are very close. It is usually better to have more than too little :. These discs represent the culmination of literally decades of research and development to create the absolute highest quality test material for video and audio. Each of these patterns was hand-built using software created by us. Every line and grid is positioned with sub-pixel accuracy, and levels are dithered to produce accuracy to 5 digits of precision. No other test patterns can boast similar accuracy.

This collection of test patterns and instructions can get your display looking its best with a few simple tweaks. The guide walks the user through the collection of test patterns and gives step-by-step instructions on how to easily calibrate any TV, projector, or monitor. There is almost no video projector, television, or monitor that cannot benefit from calibration. I have tested hundreds of them and only found a very few that are on-spec out of the box. There is always room for improvement in color accuracy and picture quality. And calibration dials in the display to its environment. And there are other considerations like image geometry, video processing, color standards, gamma, grayscale, and a host of other parameters that need to be optimized if you want to get the most from your shiny new display. Their contribution to the craft has been a series of disc-based test pattern suites that can be used to test and adjust every aspect of a display, be it a projector, television, or monitor. Their latest product is the version of the Ultra HD Benchmark. Professional video calibration is usually performed with instruments to measure light and color along with a signal generator that contains a suite of test patterns. Software like Calman brings it all together so a trained technician can adjust a projector, television, or monitor easily and efficiently. For the consumer though, that option carries considerable expense. You could buy the equipment but that will cost even more. The obvious alternative is to put those same test patterns on an optical disc and display them using a player. Spears and Munsil products can be used that way, but they also enable enthusiasts to dial in their displays visually.
Display the Brightness pattern and look for four vertical stripes in the center of the image. No other test patterns can boast similar accuracy.

The previous iteration was a single disc with 1, encoded files, which represented a high-water mark for evaluation discs at the time. The set also introduces pop-up help to simplify the calibration process. It also expands the range of formats and encodings. There is also a new Peak Luminance test pattern, designed to achieve a more accurate measurement than the legacy window pattern, and a Pixel Aligning pattern for breaking in new OLEDs. On the audio side, the set includes test material in the object-based Dolby Atmos and DTS:X surround-sound formats with tones covering setups ranging from 5.

But it's also the most thorough, including three discs, a multi-page "manual" that guides you through the basic process, and a set of filters for setting a TV's Color and Tint controls. The authors don't actually recommend using the controls however, as no such filters, even these, are totally accurate. I've long avoided these filters. Instead, and as is the recommendation here, I leave these two controls in their as-delivered defaults usually centered. They might have had some value in the CRT TV era, where few easily accessible setup controls were offered to the viewer. But their value in modern digital TVs is dubious at best. The included manual is readable but quite small as are most packaged instructions these days. But it's available for download at spearsandmunsil. Some might wonder why the complete package, including the test patterns, aren't available for purchase and download, since so much information is readily available online today.

There are a lot of subtle details that go into making them as mathematically accurate as possible, especially since you are dealing with lossy encoding. This test totally doesn't try to manipulate the public in any way. Make sure you can see the right two bars, but cannot see the left two bars. The very different overall contrast levels and average picture levels can also affect perceptibility of sharpening artifacts, so a sharpness level that looks good in SDR may have visible and distracting artifacts in HDR. Lots of modern TVs have multiple settings and modes that are effectively different kinds of sharpening, and this pattern is the right one to evaluate all of them. Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them. I had never even thought of that! If this describes you, then just ignore this and all other calibration aids and move along. The list of patterns in each subsection wraps around in a loop, so pressing right arrow while viewing the last pattern in a subsection moves to the first pattern, and pressing left arrow while viewing the first pattern in a subsection moves to the last pattern. For some formats, these peaks were retained, but metadata was included that are intended to give the display enough information to tone map the video into the available display levels. Optical Comparator These are patterns useful for adjusting color temperature with an optical comparator. Issues like posterization and banding are often most visible on skin, and may be more or less apparent on different skin tones.
Preparation Perform the calibration under the same lighting conditions you generally use to watch quality material like movies. If there are windows in the room that let in sunlight and you tend to watch movies at night, then the calibration should also be performed at night. If your display has multiple picture memories and you watch the display under multiple lighting conditions, it may be worthwhile to perform the calibration separately for each of the lighting conditions and assign each one to a different picture memory.

With others, you may find that you have to accept a little softness to avoid other artifacts, or you have to accept some minor artifacts to get rid of softness. Most people will be initially using this disc on a new TV that's still within its return period, and if your new set utterly fails some of the more difficult test patterns, maybe you'd think about returning it for a different model.
