You might know it from the movie of the same name, or possibly from that episode of Euphoria where Lexi and Fez watch said movie and then sing said song. What is especially fascinating to me is how different covers can bring in new musical elements and reshape the song without losing the core tone or message. King, so here are a few interesting facts about the original recording. The song was originally written by King for the group the Drifters, but they passed on it when King brought it to them. Since then, the song has reached the top 10 charts twice—once when it first came out, and then again in when the Rob Reiner film of the same name debuted. The original track features some notable elements, such as the deep, hollow bass, which would become the bedrock for all the subsequent covers, as well as a powerful string section, which stays hidden for a large part of the song but comes in to support the chorus with a beautiful crescendo. This allows King to demonstrate the power of his vocals early in the song, but it also generates the anticipation that the space will eventually be filled out by something even bigger, which the sprawling string section delivers on once we reach the chorus. Right off the bat, Redding begins the song by reshaping the bassline. It may seem like a small thing, but Redding begins the song slightly earlier than King, with two half beats rather than on the whole as King does. I think this further emphasizes the whole beat on the bassline by creating a lead-in to the song, as well as a melodic staircase, since each progressive note gets slightly higher before reaching the punch. Additionally, the rest of the band is shaped around this instrument. The piano plays the exact same melody as the bass, and the guitar comes in to fill the role that the triangle held on the King version. I really love how this version works around the bass to make it stand out as much as possible. It gives the song a stronger overall sound, and more importantly, a stronger emotion.

The bass line remains, but the overall attitude is lighter, even mischievous, thanks to a horn section that offers color rather than punctuation. Steve Cropper spins out winding, inventive riffs on his guitar, and then there's Otis, who sings with passion but pointedly avoids turning the lyrics into a desperate plea: He seems to be enjoying the groove as much as the rest of us.
