Continuing a poor trend for R-rated comedies, Strays suffered a humiliating opening weekend at the box office. The Will Ferrell-led comedy features a dog struggling to come to terms with the fact that his owner abandoned him. With the help of a few other neighborhood dogs, he realizes what has truly happened and eventually begins to work on a plan to seek vengeance against his former master. While Ferrell's Reggie manages to find himself by the end of Strays , he could not find any success at the box office. The film currently sits fourth in the overall box office after Blue Beetle , Barbie , and Oppenheimer.

It's a dog's life for R-rated comedies at the box office these days, and "Strays" is the latest unlucky puppy to learn that lesson. Not helping this movie about animals with celebrity voices is the fact that the celebrities themselves are currently cut off from promoting "Strays. Those hits have become even more elusive in the streaming age, where a lot of people don't feel much urgency to see a comedy in theaters rather than simply waiting for the home release. Looking at those examples, they all had one thing on their side that "Strays" doesn't: great reviews. It's not just a skill issue, though. Timing is also important. The film follows an abandoned dog voiced by Will Ferrell who teams up with several strays voiced by Jamie Foxx , Isla Fisher , and Randall Park to get revenge on his abusive owner Will Forte. Reggie is a gullible Border Terrier living with his owner, Doug, who only keeps him to spite an ex-girlfriend. Reggie is under the impression that Doug loves him and does everything he can to make him happy, much to Doug's chagrin. When Reggie inadvertently destroys Doug's bong, Doug makes several attempts to ditch Reggie, which Reggie views as a game. Losing track of Doug in a city hours away, Reggie meets a street-wise Boston Terrier named Bug who teaches him how to be a stray after he defends him from a Rottweiler and a Doberman. He decides to get revenge by biting Doug's penis off, and the other strays accompany him for support. During the journey, the group bonds as they get into several situations, culminating in getting caught by animal control after a hallucinogenic mushroom-induced high causes them to maul a family of rabbits, which they mistake for toys. During their captivity, Bug admits that he used to have a family of his own but was forced to escape when they tried to euthanize him after he bit the daughter though he fails to see exactly what he did wrong.
