Who are they for? Golfers looking for more distance and forgiveness. It works like this — a polymer-filled slot in the sole makes the bottom of the irons more flexible, which helps shot hit on the bottom of the clubface launch higher, faster and with less spin. So what about shots hit on the heel and toe? The new Face Slot Technology, which is included in the irons of each set, is like Speed Pockets for the heel and toe areas of the club. When mishits happen there, the slots allow the face to more easily. That, in theory, will help generate more ball speed on mishits than previous TaylorMade irons. The RSi 1 irons are the largest and most forgiving of the three irons in the RSi family. Aimed squarely at the higher handicap golfer looking for maximum forgiveness, their Face Slots, Speed Pockets and thin faces help deliver consistent ball speeds all over the face. The irons are cast from stainless steel and the 8-iron through AW are cast from stainless steel. The RSi 2 irons are aimed at better players looking for a more traditional shape, sound and feel. The 3-AW contain five different constructions to maximize feel, distance, sound and consistency. Tungsten has been added low in the toe of the irons for added forgiveness. The irons are cast from stainless steel, and the 8-PW are cast from stainless steel, but with the added feel benefit of a forged carbon steel face insert.

Do they deliver? Mis-hits happen. Year after year they have claimed to have created the longest clubs ever. I can only absorb so much hyperbolic marketing before I basically become immune to it and tune it out. So now they have shifted the direction to forgiveness.

This discovery led the company to the development of a revolutionary new technology designed to improve consistency and distance on off-centre strikes. With brand new Face Slot Technology working in tangent with an improved Speed Pocket with Thru Slot Technology , the new RSi irons provide the golfer with forgiveness across the entire face as opposed to just on the bottom when catching the ball thin. Utilising Face Slot Technology 3- to 8-iron for the first ever time in an iron, RSi represents TaylorMade's longest ever iron, and that's even when missing the sweet spot. Two slots are located near the heel and toe of the clubface to provide uniform flexion across the face, and this also helps protect ball speed and generates more consistent distance on off-centre hits. An improved Speed Pocket with ThruSlot Technology 3- to 7-iron provides ball speed protection on shots below the centre of the face and increases launch angle and ball speed on all shots.
