PCs Valentine and Casper arrest a man for being drunk-in-charge. Ackland's boyfriend is knocked down in a hit-and-run incident. Meadows leads a briefing and tells the team that the fire at Hendersons' house was an arson attack. Stuart immediately suspects a link between the fire and the hit and run that knocked down June's boyfriend Rod. After applying for the DI position, Sam is thrilled when Jack informs of her successful interview; she is the new DI and will start her new role in a month or so. June is overwhelmed when she visits Rod in hospital and accepts his earlier marriage proposal. Elsewhere, Smithy and Lewis are called to a local market where they uncover a scam involving dodgy computer games. Lewis discovers his Gran, who he lives with, is moving to Jamaica to be with his mother, and, Sam announces to Phil and Stuart that she will be the new DI. But how will her ex-lovers take to her being their new boss? Gina covers for an absent Lewis, and as such, is tasked with patrolling the beat with Roger. Their first case involves a man who has been assaulted and locked in the boot of his car. The chain of events leading to the attack include a rape, a grudge and a string of lies. Elsewhere, on his way into work, Lewis investigates a mugging, and Gina is horrified when she is called to court to give evidence at a hearing, and comes across a very familiar face. Diane and Honey find a woman dead on her sofa, and when they investigate, Mickey and Jo discover that what appears to be a suicide may be a case of murder. Roger and Dan investigate an attack in a local pub, where landlord Vince Morgan suffered a head wound.

Noble and Keane answer a distress call to the home of Ray Moore and find his ten-year-old daughter, Annie, threatening a youth with a gun.

Several episodes were aired out of production order, most notably the final parts of the six episodes for the Zain storyline. Despite at the time not even being billed for broadcast, and the 'previously' and 'next time' segments not matching the episodes around them, the episodes were brought forward due to heavy demand from the British viewing public. This also meant that the 'previously' and 'next time' segments on the subsequent episodes had to be re-edited to show this, and that two small additional scenes had to be recorded to be placed into Episode to reference the death of PC Honey Harman. For the DVD release, to avoid confusion, these episodes have been renumbered and now serve as and , with the following four episodes renumbered to — respectively. This series saw the return of several multi-part story arcs, the likes of which had last featured in the second half of Series
