On his 40th birthday Tom Good decides to drop out of the rat-race in order to do something meaningful with his life. He, along with supportive wife Barbara, attempts to become self-sufficient in Surbiton. The journey of self-sufficiency continues with the introduction of Margo the goat, some shy hens and Lenin the cockerel. Margo and Jerry feel that an intervention is needed to bring the Goods back to normality. A light hearted confrontation between Tom and his old boss fails to change anything. The stress of 'a 36 hour day' starts to take its toll on Barbara after she is left to restore an old range to its former glory. The Goods also celebrate the first signs of life in their vegetable patch and viciously defend it from the birds. There are two new additions to the Good family: Pinky and Perky the pigs.
