This is not the novel The Handmaid's Tale. Appealing to imaginative fiction and the novel of ideas, the construction of perfect—or nightmarish—worlds rouses the reader's socio-political awareness of the present and invites questions on the shape of the near furure. The Handmaid's Tale deconstructs the utopian narrative by breaking the chronological order of the female protagonist's experience into a time-shifting testimony, a quest for meaning and an exploration of self versus the other. The intricate play on word and symbol can be read against the historical background of seventeenth-century New England Puritanism, as well as the twentieth-century New Right and women's rights movements, while inviting reference to the postmodernist outlook. This volume includes a bibliography, a study of the book's context, as well as essays and commentaries; the approach has been adapted to the needs of Capes and Agregation students.
I read the book wondering whether Americans and American women especially would so easily relinquish their rights.

A box set of Margaret Atwood's bestselling companioned novels, The Handmaid's Tale and The Testaments In The Handmaid's Tale, environmental disasters and declining birthrates have led to a Second American Civil War and the rise of the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian regime that enforces rigid social roles and enslaves the few remaining fertile women. Offred is one of these, a Handmaid bound to produce children for one of Gilead's Commanders. Deprived of her husband, her child, her freedom, and even her own name, Offred clings to her memories and her will to survive. In The Testaments, set more than fifteen years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, The Republic of Gilead maintains its repressive grip on power, but it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women come together, with potentially explosive results.

But not with any implement. That the novel is set contemporary to her writing it fixes the action in time. I don't know if it's self-conditioning or whatever, but my gut feelings lately are unerring. Or has fallen. Want to read. The totalitarian world created here seems scary but the same time is very engrossing. Despite the clear warnings of religious fanaticism, Atwood doesn't seem to be critiquing religion altogether. Find more of my books on Instagram. With this stunning graphic novel adaptation of Margaret Atwood's modern classic, beautifully realized by artist Renee Nault, the terrifying reality of Gilead has been brought to vivid life like never before. Atwood uses the very claustrophobic perspective of Offred to great effect. The other two seasons are new writing but with Margaret Atwood supervising the writer's room.
