By Jackie Strause. Managing Editor, East Coast. Orange Is the New Black went into its seventh and final season with ambitious ground to cover. Keeping that in mind, THR spoke with the sprawling main cast of the groundbreaking series in order to dive into how their respective stories ended.

The Netflix hit created new opportunities for women of color. It also veered far too often into tragedy porn. When Orange Is the New Black debuted in , it was celebrated for its diversity. Its cast was filled with actors of color, it depicted many facets of the LGBTQ spectrum, and it featured actors of all body types without reducing any of them to punchlines. But most of the critics including me praising the show for its diversity were also white. The longer Orange Is the New Black ran, the more it was criticized by many critics of color for how it repurposed very real tragedies and traumas faced by communities of color for stories both written by and targeted to white liberals.

This post contains major spoilers for Orange Is the New Black season seven. After six long years, Orange Is the New Black has finally come to an end. With dozens of characters to account for, the final season had to re-tread a lot of old territory while giving each of its many many characters a proper ending. Some of the endings are tragic, some are hilarious, and some are achingly bittersweet—the show in a nutshell, really. Her body is discovered by a traumatized Taystee. Later Taystee discovers that Pennsatucky actually passed the test—a truly bittersweet moment that exemplifies Orange. Daya goes full Scarface and becomes the drug kingpin of the prison, using her younger sister Eva as her drug mule. Things are left slightly open-ended, but one can assume that Aleida Piper finishes up probation, gets a job at Starbucks and a place of her own in Ohio—and, after a brief affair with another woman, ultimately stays loyal to Alex. Speaking of Alex gets transferred to prison in Ohio, an act of revenge by C. McCullough Emily Tarver after Alex spurns her. Piper comes up to visit, keeping their relationship going.
