Music plays a big role in The Last of Us , as individual episodes choose specific songs with resonance and meaning to their plot. Episode 3, "Long, Long Time," borrows its title from the Linda Ronstadt song of the same name, which plays a vital in-world role in its depiction of a devoted couple living their best life among the ruins. It's an ideal musical cue for their exploration of an empty North American landscape. It also has roots in the original video game that inspired the series -- prompting its prominent use in the show's promotional material -- as well as having a fascinating history in and of itself. It wasn't released as a record until , just two years after Williams' untimely death at the age of That makes it unusual in and of itself, but also contributes to the song's overall emotional impact.

Things you buy through our links may earn Vox Media a commission. She looks like a kid while she does it, too. For the first half of the episode, however, Joel and Ellie seem to have the whole world to themselves. When we last saw the two making a stop, it was part of a plan, a visit to a convenience store that Joel used to stash weaponry and other supplies. This, however, is different. While they stop, Joel reminisces about how in the pre-Infected times, people could go anywhere. Does that make it the official fast food of the Cordyceps apocalypse? After delivering another pun, Ellie seeks comfort from Joel, who reassures her that no one will find them. But it sounds more like an attempt at reassurance than a statement of fact. The Last of Us has previously made allusions to slavers, and we saw a group of raiders in action if unsuccessfully in the previous episode. The Infected can be blamed for the current state of the world, but much of the destruction and cruelty within it predates the Cordyceps making the leap to humans. The Cordyceps merely let it loose.

The fact that the HBO show has already changed up Joel's character a bit in that he's a little bit deaf in one ear, likely means that it will be tied in some way to Sam's inability to hear. Retrieved July 23, Abrams Media.

After the emotional love story last week, the series reminds us that this world is dangerous. At the beginning of the episode, Joel fills up the gas tank so they can continue their travels. Ellie pulls out a joke book from her backpack to pass the time. The scene plays out differently from the game, but it serves the same purpose. The puns only continue as the episode goes on, with Joel finally cracking a smile. This scene lifted word-for-word from the video game. Ellie even tosses the magazine out the window.

While not nearly as tragic as any of the previous three, this week's episode is doing plenty of important work in building the relationship between Joel and Ellie, as they learn to trust each other, start accepting each other, and begin to understand how important having someone else watching their backs can be. So much of The Last of Us as a story is about this bond, and this fourth episode is the first time we really begin to see this connection flourish. Ellie seems fascinated by the gun, pulling the trigger with an empty barrel, and smelling the weapon before she puts it away. Later on, as they continue on in the truck, Ellie rags on Joel a bit more, as she finds a Hank Williams cassette that Joel puts on, and then after finding a gay porn magazine, she jokes about how all the pages are stuck together. Much like the game, these moments with the magazine and the joke book show that the barrier between these two is cracking. Ellie is already opening herself up to her protector, while Joel is starting to slowly but surely accept Ellie and her eccentricities, bit by bit. While they drive down the road, we see that the world of man has lost to nature. Buffalo still roam in herds, whereas we see plenty of cars and military vehicles left on the side of the road, abandoned, with even a giant bridge giving out in the middle. Joel and Ellie pull off the road and into the woods to spend the night, and Joel cooks a meal of year-old Chef Boyardee ravioli. Ellie likes the pasta, and Joel even agrees with her.

An emotionally racking minute epic about the once-in-a-lifetime romance between two middle-aged survivors of the fungapocalypse. We follow Bill Nick Offerman and Frank Murray Bartlett from their meet-cute in a trapping pit to an agonizing euthanasia-suicide pact 16 years later. Offerman superbly matched Bartlett: both sexy, vulnerable, spontaneous. In the end, love triumphed over death and mushrooms. Audience reaction was quite a lot, too. Tattoos parlors were overrun with orders of Bill and Frank toasting strawberries. The A. So forgive your humble recapper if he hoped this episode would not break his heart into tiny ugly-crying shards.
