The staircase autopsy photos
I believe the importance of the documentary lies in exposing the flaws of the criminal justice system in general and junk the staircase autopsy photos in particular. Those were the injuries that actually caused her death. Exsanguination was the cause of death — not blunt force trauma to her brain, not a fractured skull, not strangulation.
We prepared by going to Germany to interview witnesses and secure the relevant records. But we knew that if this evidence was presented to a jury, our defense would be severely prejudiced. And the prosecution knew this too. It put us in a difficult position. They were completely opposed. But if we filed a motion to prohibit the exhumation, we would look like we were trying to hide something. The press would be all over us about that.

Firstly, yes The Staircase is based on real life events. If you have been watching the drama unfold on Sky Atlantic or if you have watched the documentary on Netflix true story then you might have a lot of questions. So many theories, which one do you believe? Did Michael Peterson do it? Did she fall as a result of an accident? Did someone enter the home and kill her? See below a case summary and review from both TV series. Please note spoilers regarding both shows. On 9th December , Michael Peterson called to report his wife had fallen down the stairs and was still breathing, and needed an ambulance. They had been out by the pool drinking when Kathleen, his wife, had come in to the house to get to bed as she had an important meeting the next day. He went into the house a half an hour later to find her covered in blood at the bottom of the stairs. I had no idea what a blow poke was until I watched these TV shows! I am sure I am not the only one.
I was convinced that Michael was not guilty.
In the early morning hours of December 9, , authorities were called to the Durham, North Carolina home of Michael and Kathleen Peterson on reports of a fatal accident. Michael said he remained outside for some time after Kathleen went inside to go to bed. When he went inside to join his wife, he was horrified to find her lying unconscious at the bottom of a staircase. When authorities arrived on scene, Kathleen was declared dead. However, a more thorough examination, which was conducted by a coroner, revealed Kathleen's injuries were far more complex than they initially appeared. At the time of her death, Kathleen Peterson was 48 years old.

The documentary follows Michael around his home, it documents what happened in court and shows the investigations that led to the trial from the defense point of view. I am happy Michael Peterson and others are free to finally live their lives and that no matter, the Durham system corrected itself, or was corrected. My thoughts on the first three readers read some really good things. I understand how both sides feel. I believe no one was truly prepared to hear it in the first trial. Your work on this case was exemplary. But feel free to start something up. This series served as a reminder to me of my duty as a juror, should I ever have the opportunity. The lack of filing a motion, and the daughters singing permission seem to be two separate issues. It was a heavy fall resulting in me aching all over especially my legs for 6 months. So the prosecution tried to convince the jury that Michael had learned how to make a death look like an accident. I hope Michael and his family can find some peace, and take comfort in the support of people like us who believe in his innocence. Rudolf, I too just finished the series. I find the owl theory peculiar, yet plausible.

Sky Atlantic's latest drama The Staircase has got everyone talking, particularly regarding the story it's based upon and the mysterious death of Kathleen Peterson.
Not because I thought MP was guilty but because of all the scenes of casual talk about her death and laughing between Henry Lee, defense and MP. Brendan Silliman on July 6, at pm. Although I believe you to be an excellent trial lawyer, I really question your ethics. Did she fall as a result of an accident? But if that was what the lacerations were, where is the evidence to show the fall at the stairs killed her? Thank you! Damian S. Does that necessarily make him a violent murderer? Much like the trial, from what I could gather. I kept looking at the photos of her head injuries and it struck me that they were curvilinear because of her skull being round… and they looked so familiar.
