Our British Museum Lectures series is a rich and collaborative programme of events with British Museum curators across our four bookshops, baykoreans accompanying a magnificent new exhibition in London.

I find buying books hard to resist. My wife, no slouch herself when it comes to reading, thinks I suffer from an addiction or compulsion — a kind of book lust. I find it impossible to content myself with simply buying another book to read when I have finished the last one. At some point in the late 7th century Ethelreda founded a monastery on the site of a parish church and by around years later, it had become one of the two richest abbeys in all England — second only to Glastonbury in its vast wealth. In the Norman period work on what became the present cathedral began and for a few hundred years the good times continued, as countless pilgrims made their way towards this place on the River Ouse to visit the shrine of the now St Ethelreda, until when Henry VIII put a violent end to that kind of thing. However what I really like about the place is the magnificent bookshop on the High Street whose windows look out over the Cathedral just in case you find yourself missing it. The crime section alone, by the door as you walk in, is bursting with volumes and not just the usual suspects.

All of them have the same charm and appeal as the new Edinburgh branch to suit the taste of its readers. All the branches have a striking blue shopfront that stands out on their respective high streets. Due to pandemic the family-run bookshop had to shut down its stores temporarily in Ely, Bath, St Andrews and Edinburgh in March. The business continued to work with authors from across the UK to curate reading lists and collections for visitors to its website, and delivered signed copies of the latest fiction and non-fiction books to its loyal base of subscribers every month. From the start Robert wanted to run a bookshop with real authority, one that was staffed by true booklovers who had the agency to seek out a wide range of books and who could recommend titles from the huge number that they had personally read.
