New forthe Triumph Tiger sees the British manufacturer enter the middleweight adventure sector for the first time.
Communing with the motorcycle and my moto-brethren for a two-day, rustic motorcycle test is just my style. Triumph offers two exciting flavors of its new adventure-touring Tiger the XC cross-country aimed at riders who like to occasionally play in the dirt, and the standard Tiger for folks who prefer their roads mostly paved. The standard version comes with a lower seat, street-oriented suspension, and a lower price tag. For an extra grand the XC gets you a inch front wheel with a high-mounted fender, knobbier tires, and more suspension travel. Considering the nature of the event, riding both paved and gravel roads, both units handled the terrain rather well, but a bigger wheel up front always helps. The stroke, however, was increased to bring the engine up to cc, nicely boosting horsepower and torque.

The suspension set-up is such that, overall, on road, both are more than capable of mixing it with sports bikes and are a real blast to ride, while at the same time being decently stable, comfortable, distance machines. And that, combined with the light clutch, perfectly slick gearbox and impeccable throttle response, makes the Tiger XC a doddle to ride. Neat touches abound, such as a little switch to lower the headlamp for pillion use, the clever seat height adjusters, plenty of bungee hooks and decent underseat storage. The quality seems good, especially with the clocks, paint etc and, with a claimed mile potential range and raft of accessories is immensely versatile. You pays your money, you takes your choice… the cheaper version of the two Tigers ticks virtually every box and is probably, unless you specifically NEED some off-road ability, the more logical choice. But for many, the full-sized XC looks better, due to its size and stature, and, with genuine off-road ability, has more strings to its bow. Both are decent value. While a plethora of accessories such as tall screen, sat nav holder, posh levers, are available to take things further still although the heated grips are a little bulky and clunky compared to the seamlessly integrated BMW versions. With its flat torque curve and smooth power delivery, the Tiger has been designed to be easy to ride in all conditions, including off-road. Gas mileage is not great, hopefully will get better as bike gets more mileage. Engine torque is good all the way from rpm, midrange up to rpm is strong, a couple of times have gone to rpm for a few seconds.
