The manga volume that it is made up of is " Enter Trunks ". This small saga contains eight episodes and is placed between the Garlic Jr. Saga and the Androids Saga.
Originally airing in Japan on February 24, , between episodes and , the special is based on an extra chapter of the manga series. In an alternate timeline , Goku succumbs to a viral heart disease. Goku's death, being the result of natural causes, means that he can no longer be revived with the Dragon Balls. With the death of Piccolo, Earth's guardian, Kami , dies as well and the Dragon Balls are permanently rendered unusable, making it impossible for anyone to be revived. Thirteen years later, most of humanity has been killed by the Androids who routinely terrorize the planet, while Gohan , the sole survivor of the battle, repeatedly fails to defeat them despite having achieved the Super Saiyan transformation. He decides to train Trunks, the adolescent son of Vegeta and Bulma , who struggles to become a Super Saiyan.

Future Trunks made waves and impactful acts throughout his first introduction back in Dragon Ball Z , and remains to this day many peoples' favorite character. Nevertheless, Future Trunks doesn't stay long, and soon in the Majin Buu Saga we are introduced to Present Trunks, a younger more brash personality with a better life and family. However, many are willing to debate and argue that Future Trunks has a much better character arc and usefulness to the plot as opposed to Present Trunks. Is this true though? Present Trunks as a character is not particularly disliked, and certainly not hated or disregarded as a useless character. Some might say that Present Trunks as a kid was a fun personality to witness, albeit not as complex or deep as Future Trunks due to the lack of a harsh life or tragedy. Present Trunks and Future Trunks couldn't be any more different even when they are both grown up, the only difference being that one has developed a more mature side to their personality and responsibility as earth's protector, and the other has a lax personality and somewhat of a spoiled lifestyle. But is this enough for a clear divide as to which character is better than the other? Perhaps the issue runs deeper than just likability or differences in personality, but also in connection and emotional resonance when comparing both the present and future versions of Trunks Briefs. To begin the examination and making a fair assessment of both characters, it bears mentioning that both have valuable evidence to support each other's likability and emotional connection to the audience.
However, he retracts his disdain for the boy after being surprised by the young Saiyan 's strength after they battle, most notably at his ability to transform into a Super Saiyan at such a young age. However, Future Trunks does have some qualities typical of Saiyans, especially before he went into the past. Within the series, he is the half- Saiyan half-human son of Vegeta and Bulma and has at least two noteworthy incarnations. The present-timeline incarnation of Trunks is introduced as an infant during the story arc which features the first appearance of the Red Ribbon Androids. Akira Toriyama stated that it was difficult to decide on Present Trunks' voice. The producer at Toei Animation and the editorial department discussed that, perhaps, it would be better if they changed to a different voice actor for the child version. At that time, the serialization was still going on, and Toriyama did not know how the manga story would end; young Trunks might have ended up growing up and the story might have continued to the same time period when teenage Trunks returned to the future. In that case, if the voice actor would have been changed, it would have sounded strange.
It was revealed in the anime that the half-Saiyan hailed from a time where the Z-Warriors had all been killed; a future in which Goku died of a heart virus, and most of the main characters were killed by the evil creations of classic Dragon Ball villain Doctor Gero, Android 17, and Android Once Trunks succeeded in helping them, he went back to the future, which had become an alternate timeline. Future Trunks never returned in Dragon Ball Z , but the events of Dragon Ball Super revisited the character and revealed what happened to him through flashbacks. It was explained that with the power Trunks acquired from fighting and training alongside the Z-Warriors, he finally accomplished what he could never before and managed to kill both Androids 17 and After that, Trunks became the self-appointed protector of the Earth. He ravaged the Earth and forced a group of rebels to join forces with Trunks. While with them, Trunks forced a close friendship with an adult Mai, a former member of the Pilaf Gang.

In the alternate timeline, Future Trunks is running and hiding from a mysterious being, causing destruction all over with its ki blasts. He enters a building and meets with his mother, Future Bulma, who is working on an experiment, and is relieved that Future Trunks is well. Future Bulma is working on the Time Machine, and has prepared enough fuel for a one-way trip to the past, betting that there will be another way a round-trip can be made. Future Trunks offers to take the fuel back to Capsule Corporation, and tells Future Bulma to rest, but Future Bulma insists on coming with him, in case "that guy" attacks. As they prepare to leave, an explosion is made close to them, which destroys Future Bulma's equipment. Future Bulma sees something coming, and gives Future Trunks the fuel and tells him to go, before a mysterious being grabs Future Bulma. Future Bulma tells Trunks to hurry, when the mysterious being charges a Ki Blast and blows up the building, which kills Future Bulma.
