Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is a first-person shooter video game developed by Iguana Entertainment and published by Acclaim for the Nintendo 64 console and Microsoft Windows. It was released in in North America and Europe. Turok is an adaptation of the Valiant Comics comic book series of the same name. The player controls Turok, a Native American warrior, who must stop the evil Campaigner from conquering the universe with an ancient and powerful weapon. As Acclaim's first title for the Nintendo 64, Turok was part of a strategy to develop games internally and license merchandise; Acclaim acquired the rights to Turok when it purchased Valiant Comics in , renaming it Acclaim Comics. Suffering from cash flow problems and falling sales, Acclaim came to rely on Turok as its best hope for a financial turnaround. Iguana pushed the Nintendo 64's graphics capabilities to its limits, and were forced to compress or cut elements to fit the game on its 8 megabyte cartridge.

It acts as a total reboot to the series, serving as the first installment in a new continuity. Turok was developed by Propaganda Games and published and distributed by Touchstone Interactive in North America, Ireland, and the United Kingdom and by Capcom in all other territories. Development of the game began in shortly after Buena Vista Games' purchasing of the Turok license. The developers conceived the game as a reboot and a modern, fresh start to the franchise while drawing story and design inspirations from James Cameron's film, Aliens. The game was scheduled to be released in North America for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox in November but was delayed until February 5, ; [6] however, it was instead released on January 31, Critical reception towards the game was mixed, with critics divided on the game's design and gameplay, while criticism was directed at the story and writing. Several critics, however, praised the game's atmosphere, concept and ideas. Despite mixed reception, Turok was a commercial success, selling over 1 million copies throughout all platforms in just two weeks. The game's success pushed Propaganda to begin work on a direct sequel, simply titled Turok 2 , but the project was eventually cancelled due to layoffs at Propaganda Games, following 's economic crisis. Shortly before E3 , the first official announcement of the game's development was disclosed. Buena Vista Games announced they had obtained the video game rights to Turok from franchise owner Classic Media. The agreement included developing Turok games for both consoles and handheld devices. The announcement also stated that Buena Vista's new studio, Propaganda Games , would oversee development of the new games.

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was a healthy blend of the Id Software titles like Quake and Doom , mixed with more open-ended Metroidvania-style levels that feature puzzle solving.
