The Minnesota Golden Gophers commonly shortened to Gophers are the college sports teams of the University of Minnesota. The university fields a total of 21 9 men's, u of mn gopher football, 12 women's teams in both men's and women's sports and competes in the Big Ten Conference. In all other sports, they belong to the Big Ten Conference.

Founded in , Minnesota has been a member of the Big Ten Conference since its inception in as the Western Conference. The Golden Gophers claim seven national championships : , , , , , , and The Minnesota Golden Gophers college football team played its first game on September 29, , a 4—0 victory over Hamline University. Eight years later in , the Gophers played host to Wisconsin in a 63—0 victory. With the exception of , the Gophers and Badgers have played each other every year since then.
