I have been involved in radiology medical education for my entire career as director at Hahnemann and Yale universities and, sinceuci radiology residency, at UC Irvine, where I served as director of the radiology residency program. Many of our applicants are in the uci radiology residency of their classes, are well published and have had extraordinary life experiences. Yet these alone do not make a good radiologist, and the skills involved in visualizing and interpreting various imaging modalities develops over time.
The Department of Radiological Sciences at UC Irvine Health School of Medicine offers a four-year residency training program in diagnostic radiology, including all aspects of medical imaging. The Long Beach VA, a bed medical facility located in beautiful Long Beach, CA, is an integral component of resident education, boasting freshly remodeled reading rooms and a new completely redesigned angio-interventional suite. New residents will complete one year of rotations before being assigned any independent, in-house call. The chief residents make the rotation, vacation and call schedules, with the approval of the program director, and actively elicit the preferences of individual residents. On average, we have 12 hours of teaching conferences every week, including an entire afternoon dedicated solely to didactic teaching. In addition, our residents are actively involved in giving teaching conferences to fellow radiology residents and rotating medical students, and regularly present at interdepartmental conferences and grand rounds.

Background: Overnight radiology coverage for trauma patients is often addressed with a combination of on-call radiology residents RR and a teleradiology service; however, the accuracy of these 2 readers has not been studied for trauma. We aimed to compare the accuracy of RR versus teleradiologist interpretations of CT scans for trauma patients. Study design: A retrospective analysis March through May of trauma patients presenting to a single American College of Surgeons Level I trauma center was performed. Patients whose CT scans were performed between 10 pm to 8 am were included, because their scans were interpreted by both a RR and teleradiologist. Interpretations were compared with the final attending faculty radiologist's interpretation and graded for accuracy based on the RADPEER scoring system. Discrepancies were characterized as traumatic injury or incidental findings and missed findings or overcalls. Turnaround time was also compared. Results: A total of 1, patients and 8, interpretations were included. Compared with teleradiologists, RR had a lower discrepancy 7. Among major discrepancies, RR had a lower rate of traumatic injury discrepancies 3. The mean turnaround time was shorter for RR The combination of both RR and teleradiologist interpretations had a lower overall discrepancy rate than RR 5. Conclusions: This study identified lower discrepancy rates and a faster turnaround time by RR compared with teleradiologists for trauma CT studies. The combination of both interpreters had an even lower discrepancy rate, suggesting this combination is optimal when an in-house attending radiologist is not available.
