Over six seasons, Vikings covered a huge chunk of time, and fans saw characters who may have appeared to be major players in season one become entirely forgotten only a few seasons later. Rollo, for example, was one of the most important characters early on, yet barely appeared at all in the final seasons despite still being alive. Other characters were killed off surprisingly early, and big time jumps often aged up characters by many years between seasons. Hirst said: "When I was writing the show, Ragnar died at the end of season one, But actually when we were making it, I realised by the end of the season we were only on the start of Ragnar's journey. Hirst and Fimmel recalled having an argument about the delivery of Ragnar's last speech in " All His Angels ". Fimmel initially felt uneasy about it, but he was convinced of its importance and impact on Ragnar's sons, saying: "me and Michael spoke about how the kids will find out what he said. Ragnar and his brother, Rollo, return from a battle in the Baltic lands during which Ragnar has visions of the god Odin and his valkyries.
