In the vast and ever-evolving landscape of Linux distributions, DistroWatch has emerged as a popular hub for tracking and comparing different distros. While imperfect, DistroWatch ratings still serve as a good benchmark, offering insights and a starting point for exploring the vast array of Linux options. Recently, however, something caught our attention, namely the average rating, which now has a new leader. Linux enthusiasts and distro-hoppers are always looking for the next big thing in the world of operating systems. The average rating was, for many years, dominated by Arch Linux, but now, albeit slightly surprisingly but entirely deservedly, Void has topped it. Despite its year history, Void has never achieved the kind of popularity that some other top Linux distributions have. The main reason for this is that it is primarily aimed at advanced users, and the closest thing to Void we can think of is Arch.
Void Linux offers a unique distribution with a lower barrier to participation that is easy to manage. DistroWatch lists active distributions, but these numbers are misleading. Many distributions are minor variations of a half dozen major distributions, distinguished by their default software selection or oriented to a particular task. A notable exception is Void Linux [1] , a small project organized more like the distributions of two decades ago, with every part of its structure carefully considered. The result is one of the more original distributions available today.

Welcome to this year's 9th issue of DistroWatch Weekly! The Linux terminal is a core part of virtually every distribution and it has its roots in a long tradition, going back to the dawn of Unix. While virtual terminals and modern shells have polished the experience of typing and running commands, adding keyboard shortcuts and auto-completion for convenience, the terminal has not evolved much over the past 50 years. The Warp Terminal team is aiming to change this, ushering in a new type of virtual terminal which approaches the command line like a modern desktop application. Warp introduces text editor style command line editing, predictive typing, logically separated output, and AI assistance. We begin this week with a look at Warp and its capabilities. AI assistants are popping up everywhere, from web browsers to development tools to the terminal. What do you think of the idea of merging AI assistance into the virtual terminal?

Hoping things will change, but as far as the installer is concerned, not before years at least. The project latest release, Project Trident What's easy for you is easy for intruders, frenemies, hackers, botnets, spammers, and spies. Canonical serves up a malicious Snap package. Void hates derivatives as much as Arch. Attempting to install octoxbps resulting in a 'missing dependencies' message. I found Flatpak applications would install, but they are not added to the MATE application menu and there are no launch icons added to the desktop. It's fun, it's free , and it's full of insights! A desktop environment has a launcher, a panel to hold open apps and a whole lot of interconnected apps, which one really doesn't need. Don't hold your breath for anything graphical. Although Fedora was formally unveiled only in September , its origins effectively date back to when it was launched by two Linux visionaries -- Bob Young and Marc Ewing -- under the name of Red Hat Linux. Thes are - for me, really important things and features, not how beautiful are icons, wallpapers and meanwhile using the very same bases like systemd, DM, libraries etc. The choice of packages is huge, so most of the time it is enough to just install via xbps.
