Landing flaps basically are the same as combat but create a lot more drag and can slow down your plane, and can help you turn tighter as well, just slower.
While normally in the manuals you will find "do not lower flaps below X speed", this means full flaps down. It's a bit hard to find the allowed flap settings at various flap deflections. Eg something like this:. This is a stupid question probaby but how do u set flaps to anything other than takeoff, landing, and combat? I don't have date for combat flaps in real planes. What i can mention is the old limits they used to have, which are interesting looking at your chart for the Mustang. That was before the "Flaps Warning Bug" appeared where they bandaid fixed it by making it impossible to rip flaps in actual battles, but not in test flight.

They are to increase lift upwards, so if you're in a tight turn on your wings you have extra lift power to turn therefore giving you better ability of shooting your target or break off discontinue an attack run or break into an enemy aircraft , therefore allowing you to stay in a turn with the same power with more lift giving you more time to adjust to a good firing vector to kill an enemy. Landing flaps slow your plane down over time, in addition with LG's Landing Gears down it will slow you down at half the pace of just landing flaps, take off are the opposite and allow you to take off faster and give you a good amount of take-off power to get off the ground if on short run ways like Carriers for instance , raised allow better climb rates, combat increase turn rates of some planes and decrease them by around seconds I don't have the exact figures. Combat, Increased lift for dogfights and turning fights giving boosted lift upwards if in a tight turn on your wings left or right. So they're for making tighter turns at the cost of losing speed I "think" i got the idea In my experience about the only aircraft that dont get them are British single engine jobbies and biplanes? I know some Germans have it because I'm playing some right now, and some Bombers in the British line, I know the Hellcat Prem for the Brits has them, and some other ones, but it is most likely relating to Heavy Fighters to Medium maybe Heavy Bombers I dunno why though. Anyway the combat flaps are not only for horizontal turning,they are also working nice while in dive. Pretty essential for Beaufighters in vertical attacks,especially in the last closing moments. Keep the flaps rised till your controls lock down and then kick in the combat flaps,it will push the reticle and give you fine lead on your target.

You may start in a boom and zoom surprise attack, all good and well but eventually it will end up with someone in a horizontal turn fight or a vertical up and down fight. My question is about the combat flaps! For a horizontal turn fight, when and how much do you use your flaps? Watched a great dogfighting video from Phil Styles who was swatting down AI left and right. Waggs himself had commented a month before on this video on the P's wobbling nose while heavy elevator use and if he is watching Phil's video then I take Phil's methods as valid!! Plenty of DCS pilots use unrealistic tactics. But even then, the flight model is a decent bit work in progress so expect some handling aspects especially near stall and at stall to change.

Off topic a bit,but the Beaufighters are joy to fly and imho,the first Beau is just ufo right now and one of the reason why is the whole "IL-2 OP" stuff hard for me to buy. The argument about partial flaps on landing in a strong crosswind is because partial flaps make the rollout easier to control. It's the former fighter pilot in me that knows that flap actuators and other hardware were not designed for high G maneuvering stress.
