Its name is derived from the more southerly route of service of the historical South Ferry Company in comparison to the Fulton Ferry. The name "South Ferry" derives from a more southerly route of service than previous ferry lines between what were then the separate cities of New York and Brooklyn , rather than from being at the southern tip of Manhattan. The "Old Ferry" later renamed the Fulton Ferry , crossed between Manhattan and Brooklyn from streets that in each city would eventually be renamed "Fulton Street". As the City of Brooklyn grew, the area south of Atlantic Avenue, known as South Brooklyn , began to become developed, but the area lacked easy access to the ferry terminals in the northern parts of that city. Calls for a new ferry on a more southerly route were first brought up before the New York City Council in , the proposal being commonly known as the "New South Ferry" since , [1] but progress stalled until the issue was taken up by the City of Brooklyn in

In the early s, as part of the recovery effort from the September 11, , attacks , a new South Ferry terminal for the Broadway—Seventh Avenue Line was proposed. That station opened in , replacing the loop station and providing a connection between the Broadway—Seventh Avenue Line's 1 train and the Broadway Line's N, R, and W trains. The newer terminal reopened in June following extensive renovations and waterproofing work. This station complex is the third on the site to bear the name South Ferry. The first was an elevated station located nearby, which was open from to and served the former IRT Ninth , Sixth , Third , and Second Avenue elevated lines. The second was the old South Ferry loop station, located above the existing station complex. Planning for a subway line in New York City dates to McDonald and funded by August Belmont Jr. Several days after Contract 1 was signed, the Board of Rapid Transit Railroad Commissioners instructed Parsons to evaluate the feasibility of extending the subway south to South Ferry , and then to Brooklyn. The South Ferry loop was built as part of subsection 2 of Contract 2 and was largely constructed as an open trench. Because Battery Park had been created largely through land reclamation , workers found skulls, copper coins, logs, and remnants of brick piers when they were excavating the station's site.

The Staten Island Ferry, one of the last operating ferry systems in New York, transported people between Manhattan and its surrounding boroughs long before bridges were introduced. The northern shores of Staten Island were littered with piers, competing ferry companies vied for a place in the busy waters. Today, the Staten Island Ferry provides almost 22 million people with ferry service annually: taking almost 70, passengers daily between St George on Staten Island and Whitehall Street in Manhattan. The ferry is the only non-vehicular mode of transport between Staten Island and Manhattan. The New York City Department of Transportation is responsible for the maintenance of the ten-vessel fleet along with numerous facilities including the St George and Whitehall terminals in Staten Island and Manhattan respectively.
