The comic features a character identifiable as a minstrel , bard or folk singer , performing a narrative song on a jetty. The words appear to recount the fate of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald , a famously wrecked vessel and thus seemingly an ideal subject for a musical retelling in a traditional way that is often found in the form of a sea shanty and tells of events familiar to those who associate with ships. The words of the song start off very much in the manner of such a nostalgic recounting, but soon becomes a direct reference to the art of songwriting itself. Rather than describing in song how a disaster occured, it turns out to be a description of how a disaster occured for the sake of a song. The reason for sinking is still unknown, but it's speculated that her hull broke up in the rough waters of the Great Lakes. This xkcd is implying that the real reason for her sinking is that a songwriter bribed a mechanic to intentionally engineer her sinking and give him sufficient material for a new song. As a punchline, the verse goes on to reveal that another even greater maritime disaster had already occured for the sake of a film. The title text continues this particular cycle by suggesting that an even bigger potential disaster was orchestrated in space , as the 'real life' basis for yet another film.

Low level explanations tend to take the form of an understandable but fairly un-illuminating derivation from calculus and elementary algebra, while at a more advanced level they are shown to relate to symmetries of xkcd physical system in xkcd way which is very general and powerful, xkcd, but nonetheless extremely abstract and mysterious. Randall Patrick Munroe born October 17, [1] [2] is an American cartoonist, author, and engineer best known as the creator of the webcomic xkcd. Munroe has worked full-time on the comic since late Munroe was born in Easton, Pennsylvania. His father has worked as an engineer and marketer. Munroe worked as a contract programmer and roboticist for NASA at the Langley Research Center , [11] [7] before and after his graduation with a physics degree. Munroe's webcomic, entitled xkcd , is primarily a stick figure comic. Its tagline describes it as "A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language". Munroe had originally used xkcd as an instant messaging screenname because he wanted a name without a meaning so he would not eventually grow tired of it. Munroe now supports himself by the sale of xkcd -related merchandise, primarily thousands of t-shirts a month.
