Yaoyao Ma Van As is an art director, painter and illustrator whose work brings a fairy-tale touch to real-life moments — whether whimsical, introspective or poignant. Close-up Culture caught up with the LA-based artist to chat about her work, Parker the dog, drawing for Disney, and much more. A: I really enjoy storytelling in my illustrations. Sometimes I try to convey a certain feeling, other times I just have an idea that I want to explore. Where do you usually draw inspiration from? A: My inspiration comes from a lot of different things- sometimes people, experiences, thoughts, song lyrics, observations, or other artists.

Influenced by her parents, she became adept in various facets of Eastern art, ranging from traditional embroidery to painting. Often, her illustrations portray a girl with her pet, imbued with warmth, light, and a range of emotions. They seem to present a narrative that solitude isn't always melancholic; it can also be a realm of peace and self-discovery. Sometimes, Yaoyao delves into the theme of love, capturing the precious moments shared between two individuals. She masterfully encapsulates the subtle gestures, shared smiles, and the comforting presence of a loved one in her work.
