This week on Yellowjackets season 1, the girls disagree on whether to stay put or take their chances going to the lake. In the present day, Tai struggles with her campaign, Shauna tries to catch her husband cheating, and Natalie and Misty take a road trip — with devastating results. The episode starts off on a somber note, with the team burying people who have died, including their teammate Rachel and a few of the plane crew. Jackie is confident the rescue team will come soon, but others are getting skeptical. After taking a vote — one in which Shauna sides with Tai instead of Jackie — they all make the trek to the water, carrying the coach on a stretcher. The journey to the lake is a rough one, as the group sees horrifying things like gutted bears. Eventually, they make it to the water, and everyone splashes around and has some fun.

The group forms a circle around five improvised grave markers and Laura Lee leads a prayer for the deceased—the flight crew, team member Rachel Goldman the only player killed in the crash , Coach Martinez, and Coach Scott's leg. As Laura Lee prays, the scene flashes back to a moment in a much younger Taissa's life. She is visiting her grandmother, who is near death. Jackie thinks they should stay put in case any rescuers come in unlikely, thanks to Misty Burning the Ships in the last episode. The majority agrees with Taissa, including Shauna. After a long hike in which they come across the rotting carcass of a bear that likely was eaten by wolves, they do find the lake.
Misty has to prompt her to get the hell out before law enforcement arrive. Travis finds his brother, Javitelling him to eat the snack he brought.
So much of Yellowjackets seemed set to deal with trauma, the ongoing nightmare that the girls, now women, are still trapped in, even decades after the crash. The episode starts, rather sweetly, with a burial. Things begin to look up when Taissa, returning from a hike, spots a lake. The factions are beginning to form: We know that one girl probably a girl, technically could be the coach or Travis will end up behind the horns and veil so Jackie and Taissa now seem like likely candidates. Down at the lake, the girls have a moment of pure joy frolicking in the water. They discover an abandoned cabin in wilderness that looks straight out of The Evil Dead. Bringing in the cabin in the woods is an enjoyable little reframing of the narrative; up until this point, viewers may have assumed the show would be hunting a very human type of monster.
The survivors find a lake; from there, they spot a cabin. In , away from societal norms and regulations, Jackie and her leadership crumble bit by bit. When Taissa spots a lake a few miles away and tells the other girls that they should go to it to secure a water source, Jackie adamantly refuses, claiming that the best option for them is to stay near the plane and wait for the rescuers. The audience knows this to be true. After all, we have seen Misty destroying the emergency transmitter. Eventually, they reach the lake. As the survivors take a brief respite from their worries and fear and start to relax, Lottie spots a reflection in the distance. She and the others go looking for the source and find a cabin.
