So what happened to the rugged history teacher with a heart of gold from season one? How did we go from the entire cast of characters gathering to mourn his death in season two, to fans actively rooting for his death on Legacies? Through a complicated turn of events involving white oak stakes, magic rings, and Original witches, Alaric resigned to let himself die rather than be turned into an Original vampire that would kill Elena. By the time the series finale rolls around, Damon and Ric are barely even on speaking terms, and the dissolution of their friendship was as unnecessary as it was upsetting. While Alaric seemed destined to become a father since season one, the manner in which the show goes about creating his children is awkward at best and borderline predatory at worst—especially with the entirely unnecessary added element of Alaric developing romantic feelings for Caroline. Thankfully, he never acts on them, but Alaric being even remotely interested in Caroline feels like an utter betrayal of the warm comforting father figure the series initially positioned him as. He then followed that up with a number of xenophobic now deleted tweets and Twitter headers blaming China for the coronavirus pandemic—a series of increasingly bigoted altercations which further soured fans to his character, who at that point had already begun his descent into the Alaric we barely recognize today on Legacies. Enhanced Original Vampire is a term used to describe the type of Original vampire Alaric Saltzman became when Esther recast the Immortality Spell to turn him. This meant that he could not be killed at all, as long as Elena lived, thus meaning even the white oak stake or the white oak ash daggers have no effect on him, as it will not even neutralize him. The only way he could die is if someone killed Elena, which is why he had to guard her life. His darker personality was enhanced as well, as Alaric's true personality is now gone completely, replaced by the psychotic vampire-hating serial killer that was created as a result of using the Gilbert ring to come back to life too many times, along with Esther manipulating his mind every time he died. His life was saved by Josette Laughlin before he could die from the wound that Esther inflicted upon him. The spell, however, had one major addition. Her intention for doing so was to correct her first mistake and a means of ensuring that he would have eventually died as Esther did not intend to have any more vampires roaming the earth after the Originals and their descendants have been killed. If Elena was near death or dying, then it would affect Alaric.

This is the family relationship between the former- Enhanced Original Vampire -turned- human , Alaric Saltzman , the vampire Caroline Forbes , the siphoner , Josie and the siphoner-turned- vampire-witch hybrid , Lizzie Saltzman.
