NARRATIVA organized a conversation about the use of Artificial Intelligence in contemporary photography, which included the participation of relevant players from both photography and research areas, with the aim of discussing the potential benefits and threats that AI poses to photography as a means of documenting the world and artistic production. In the aftermath of the 5th Congress of Journalists, NARRATIVA organized a conversation, that brought together photojournalists from different media outlets and with different professional ties to debate the current state of photojournalism. This work, a collection of essays, constitutes the first critical volume published in English on the history of photography in Portuguese colonial Africa. Photography in Portuguese Colonial Africa, — brings together sixteen academic researchers from fields as diverse as history, anthropology, art history, visual culture, or museum studies, to account for some of the crucial aspects of visual representation in the longest-lasting European colonial empire in Africa. We talked about political aspects that involved this territory, about structural racism, but also about the photographic process of carrying out a long-term project, the conception of the exhibition and the publication of the book of the same name co-edited by NARRATIVA.

How the physical matter in the human brain gives origin to a mind remains one of the most important and poorly understood phenomena. Although it has been the subject of human thought for millennia, consciousness remains a mysterious and controversial topic. The phenomenon itself is very familiar to every person on the planet but there is little agreement on what it is and how it is created. This broadcast is heavily correlated with the existence of the P3 Wave and Dehaene presents extensive evidence of the relation between these different phenomena: awareness, information broadcast, and the P3 wave. Physiological evidence has shown that many cortex regions send and receive many projections to and from a broad variety of distant brain regions, allowing the neurons there to integrate information over space and time. This global interpretation is broadcast back to the global workspace creating the conditions for the emergence of a single state of consciousness, at once differentiated and integrated. Although the book is focused on biological consciousness, the sort that is created in human and, presumably, animal brains, the author also discusses the implications for artificial consciousness and concludes that, with the right information exchange architecture, there should be no obstacles to creating consciousness in digital systems. In other words, your, consciousness, your soul, if you will, are simply the result of the workings of the neurons in your brain. We should therefore be able to study these phenomena scientifically and to arrive at an understanding of what it means to be conscious of something. The main point of the book is that science has advanced enough to not be afraid of tackling that most complex question: what is consciousness? Crick decides to address what he thinks is the most accessible sub-problem within the largest challenge of understanding consciousness, the problem of visual awareness: how do we become aware of something we see? As the deep learning revolution moves forward, at a time when convolutional neural networks can perform visual tasks almost as well as humans and large language models challenge us in terms of linguist abilities, the question Crick poses is more important than ever: what exactly does it mean to understand something, what does it mean to be aware of something? Crick leads us through a convoluted path, first introducing the concepts of consciousness, awareness and attention, then presenting what is known of the physiology of the brain and of the visual system and, finally, proposing tentative explanations of what sort of phenomena could lead to visual awareness. In the process, Crick challenges philosophers, psychologists, religious people and fellow scientists who believe that the phenomenon of consciousness will remain forever beyond our reach.
