DRAM Modules Double data rate fourth generation DDR4 is a memory standard designed as a better, faster, more reliable replacement for DDR3. This design also lowers insertion force, as not all pins are engaged at the same time during module insertion. Figure 1. The pin count and key notch location for each DDR generation are different. The following table compares the different DDR generations. DDR Evolution. Table 1. Comparison of different DDR generations. Lower power. DDR4 modules are more energy-efficient, operating only at 1. The reduced power consumption gives substantial power savings and allows operation at higher speeds without higher power and cooling requirements. Higher module density. Faster data transfer speed.

Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. Can I use both in the same computer? Your system is only compatible with DDR4 memory. Yes but only with some special mainboards and you can't use both RAM types at the same time. DDR standards are never compatible with each other, because for big improvements you need to avoid the legacy issues.

DDR standards are never compatible with each other, because for big improvements you need to avoid the legacy issues. Mainboards with 2 types of RAM modules are rare and only for some transition period. They use different connectors, different rules to activate and refresh the stored values, and different voltages, so even if someone could make a physical adapter, it still would not work. It's very, very rare that a motherboard would have both kinds of connectors.

RAM's job is to remember computations for a limited amount of time so that your processor does not need to redo those computations each time. But there are misunderstandings about using different sizes of RAM together. For example, does RAM have to match? Should you use the same speed RAM? Most laptops or computers come with at least two slots for RAM sticks, if not more. Most modern motherboards will provide four RAM slots.
